2 1 Key stage 4 – national stats ICT GCSE results up 1% to 60% A*-C, but entries also up Gender gap static, 8% more girls get A*-C than boys although 10000 more boys are entered Short course also up 1% but only 46% A*-C and gender gap also an issue Applied GCSE down 10% to 29% but entries down from 47000 to 17000

3 2 GNVQ –national stats 54 000 pupils gained an intermediate GNVQ in 2006, 9 000 more than in 2005 These equate to around 210 000 A*-C Alternatives will be major ‘earners’ for both awarding bodies and government targets (Digital application More schools will also opting for starting courses in year 9

6 5 OCR Nationals – level 2 National First Award (single GCSE) National Award (2 GCSE’s) National First Certificate (3 GCSE’s) National Certificate in ICT (4 GCSE’s)

7 6 OCR National – level 2 For all qualifications must complete “Unit 1 ICT Skills for business” Then chose from a list of 22 units with some restricted combinations: First award – 2 units Award – minimum of 3 First certificate – minimum of 5 Certificate – minimum of 6

8 7 OCR Nationals Example units: Web page creation, digital imaging, multimedia, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, creating graphics, video, sound etc …on to CAD CAM, system testing and maintenance. Certification end date 2011

9 8 BTEC awards BTEC First for ICT practioners – Level 2 qualification Certificate -2 GCSE’s Core Unit Using ICT to present information plus 2 units from list of 24 Diploma – 4 GCSE’s Core units, using ICT to present and intro to computer systems plus 4 units from a list

10 9 BTEC courses – level 1 BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma for IT @work – Level 1 qualification Certificate -2 GCSE’s (D-G) Core Units Starting work in the IT industry, developing IT skills plus 2 units from list of 7 Diploma – 4 GCSE’s Core units, as for cert plus Working in the IT industry plus 5 units from a list of 7

11 10 BTEC courses – level 3 BTEC National Diploma – Level 3 qualification Being introduced in Sept 2007

13 12 So what’s coming 2007 onwards (an ever changing landscape!) Revised key stage 3 and 4 curriculum Consultation in spring 2007 In schools from autumn 2007 First teaching autumn 2008 (Consultation 5 Feb – 27 april www.qca.org.uk/ks3review) Certification end dates and so new GCSE’s 2010 Digital applications 2012 ICT GCSE’s 2011 Applied ICT 2011 Diploma Start in 2008 for those who have been successful in their bid (gone through the gateway). Include Functional skills Functional skills Still in development Pilots from September 2007 Full introduction from 2010 (revised date)

15 14 14-19 Diplomas Level 1 – just under half of total time over 2 years of KS4 4-5 GCSE’s Level 2 – just over half of total time over 2 years of KS4. Core subjects (plus ICT, PE, Citizenship, RE etc) + Diploma + at least 1 course in other area 5-6 GCSE’s Level 3 – broadly equivalent to time spent on three A-levels Mix of principal, generic, and additional/specialist learning principal learning - all new material (over 50% of time) Generic learning - functional skills, a project, personal learning and thinking skills (just under 30% of time) additional learning - existing qualifications, including GCSE/ A levels, and units from existing qualifications (just over 20% of time)

16 15 Level 2 IT diploma Principal Learning – 4 modules Technology in Business Technology Systems Enterprise and professionalism (double) Project Generic learning – functional skills, personal, learning and thinking skills, Work experience Additional/specialist learning from range of courses

17 16 Diploma – ‘Gateway process’ Process Consortia (9 in Hants) have developed proposals and sent to DfES Jan and Feb 2007 - Regional panels advise for September 2008 (or later) End Feb 2007 - Publish list of those to pass Gateway for Sept 2008 & to receive support Sept 2007 - Awarding Bodies start approval to deliver Diplomas from September 2008 Specifications made available to schools and workforce support begins September 2008 – first teaching

19 18 Functional ICT 3 broad areas: Using ICT systems Find and select information Develop, present and communicate information

20 19 Advice now…. If possible stay with same courses in 2007 as so many changes on the horizon Try to get correct curriculum amount of time Liaise/support others doing the same course Teach pupils at KS4; guide them through coursework; break down into bite sized chunks; set deadlines for those chunks; assess each section; provide feedback on how to improve; store work carefully as coursework progresses.
