Brook Trout Care

Basic Daily Care Provide a “stress free’ environmentProvide a “stress free’ environment –Keep all insulation on except the front and keep water temp. between 48 to 52F –Monitor water parameters once every other day at least twice a week. –Do NOT overfeed

Daily Check List Check aquarium temperature; adjust temp when necessaryCheck aquarium temperature; adjust temp when necessary Check equipment and make sure everything is working properlyCheck equipment and make sure everything is working properly Once trout have hatched, feed them accordinglyOnce trout have hatched, feed them accordingly Remove dead fish or debris.Remove dead fish or debris. –Record the number of dead eggs/trout Water changesWater changes

Weekly Check List Monitor water quality parameters approx. 2-3 times a week. Check all hose connections; check for leaks Ensure chiller and filters are working properly

Maintaining healthy cold water ecosystem We will be observing several water quality parameters….We will be observing several water quality parameters…. –Nitrites and nitrates –Temperature –pH –Ammonia

Nitrites and Nitrates Acceptable levels of nitrate –5-40ppm When they are higher: –Make a small water change (5 to 10 gallons) –Add StressZyme after water change To help prevent high levels: –Increase aeration by raising the filter output just above the water level

Chlorine and Chloramines Chlorine and Chloramines are both lethal to trout Chloramines cannot be removed from the water without added chemicals. Whenever we change the water; we will have 2 5 gallon buckets fill and add Aquasafe Plus to the water 48 hours before we change the water.

Temperature and pH Temp –Ideal temp is 48 to 52F pH –Ideal pH is 6 to 8.2 –Monitor parameters at least 2-3 days a week –If the pH is off, conduct a partial water change –Use store purchased pH “downer” or pH “upper”

Ammonia Acceptable Ammonia Levels: –Nitrates present- 1-0 ppm ammonia is ok –Nitrates NOT present – 0-.25 ammonia is ok; any higher will stress trout Ammonium ions and ammonia are both natural products from the developing trout. *A Cycled aquarium should have little to no ammonia readings* If Ammonia becomes an issue: –Conduct small water change –Turn off filter and add StressZyme; leave filter off for 2 hours before turning it back on. –Do no feed trout for a day or two
