Hayabusa data archive, format, and tools N. Hirata

Hayabusa observation data archive JAXA Official data archive – http://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/planet/project/hayabus a/ – FITS format with limited ancillary data – AMICA images are sorted by obs. phase/date NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) – http://sbn.psi.edu/pds/archive/hayabusa.html – PDS img format with additional data (backplane) PDS mirror server in JAXA – http://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/pub/planet/pds3/ 2

Hayabusa project Science data archive http://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/planet/projec t/hayabusa/ 3

PDS small body node http://sbn.psi.edu/

Find your data in the archives Preview thumbnail images – JAXA archive Search with Small Body Mapping Tool (sbmt) – PDS archive

AMICA images at HAYABUSA Project Science Data Archive Raw data in FITS format and thumbnail in jpeg format Categorized by operation periods – Cruise Phase (star observations) – Earth swingby (Moon and Earth) – Gate position phase (distance ~20 km) – Home position phase (distance ~ 7 km) all rotation phase coverage, observations at the opposition, of polar regions, and at optional phase angles color (multiband) observations close-ups in the later half of this phase – Decent and Touching down (distance <4 km) close-ups – Calibration 6

FITS image format http://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov/ Flexible Image Transport System The standard data format used in astronomy and small body explorations Used for the transport, analysis, and archival storage of scientific data sets – Multi-dimensional arrays: 1D spectra, 2D images, 3D+ data cubes – Tables containing rows and columns of information Fix-sized text header providing metadata – Unit size: 2880 byte – “key = value” style 7

Filename format and FITS headers Filename is composed of two parts Observation time is stored in FITS header TI_0 = 2420769254 / obs. time (TI) UTC_0 = ‘2005-09-30T12:23:22.445238’ / obs. time (UTC) BINNING = 1 / binning OUT_MODE= ‘LOSSY ’ / compression mode Headers named XX_0 store info. of the main data – XX_1headers store info. of the 0 sec exp. image for smear correction ST_2420773724_v.fits onboard proc. time (TI)filter name 8

SAOImage ds9 Standard viewer for FITS data http://ds9.si.edu/site/Ho me.html Notice for OSX users – X11 version is better – Trouble with importing non-FITS images

Notice on the image coordinate Origin of the image coordinate in ds9/FITS is the lower left corner – Most other cases: the upper left corner – AMICA: the upper left corner – Zoom>Invert Y to change the AMICA style Hayabusa was placed on the ecliptic plane – Zoom>Rotate 270° to make the ecliptic north up – So-called “the sea otter” direction Itokawa rotation is reversed – The north pole of Itokawa points to the ecliptic south – Zoom>Rotate 90° to make Itokawa’s north up 10

ds9 TIPS Brightness/Contrast control Color palette change – Pixel value and display brightness/color are independent browsing multiple images with frame Draw objects (regions) – Circle, Ellipse, Box, Polygon... 12

PDS image data st_XXXXXXXXXX_x_ddr.img – Image data with backplanes st_XXXXXXXXXX_x_ddr.lbl – Label file for image data Backplane – Pixel value – X/Y/Z coordinates – Latitude/Longitude – Distance from center – Incidence/Emission/Phase angles – H/V pixel scale – Slope – Elevation – Gravitational acceleration – Gravitational potential

PDS label items Items not included FITS header (example) TARGET_DISTANCE LONGITUDE/LATITUDE (of image center) CELESTIAL_NORTH_CLOCK_ANGLE, RA and DEC of image center SUB_SOLAR_LONGITUDE/LATITUDE INCIDENCE/EMISSION/PHASE_ANGLEs SUB_SPACECRAFT_LONGITUDE/LATITUDE TARGET_CENTER_DISTANCE Please ask Olivier ;-)

Open PDS img file in ds9 Import>Array... – Select “All” radio button – ds9 can read a gzipped file – Input parameters 1024 x 1024 x 16 (depends on each image size) Float Skip First 0 Bytes Big-Endian

Adjust brightness/contrast Extreme background value of backplanes -1e+32 – Automatic adjustment doesn’t work well Manual adjustment – Keep pushing the center button for a pixel value plane – Scale>Scale Parameters... – But... Same adjustment is applied to all planes!

Measuring boulders in ds9 Region shape: circle or ellipse – Press Shift key to rotate an ellipse region Prevent auto plot for cube data – Region>Region Parameters>deselect Auto Plot 3D – or (permanent setting) Edit>Preferences Region>deselect Auto Plot 3D Save Quit and Restart ds9

Regions on ds9

Export measurement result Region>Save Regions Example ellipse(540,705,15,14,0) ellipse(637,602,12,5,319.18492) ellipse(523,411,11,5,38.990994) ellipse(X, Y, radius, radius, angle) Easy to import into Excel or other spreadsheet – Excel users: Use Text Data Wizard Delimiters:, ( )
