Hebrews 9:22 Without the Shedding of Blood there is no forgiveness
2
Why is there so much about blood in the Bible? Isn’t it all a bit gruesome? What has blood got to do with forgiveness?
3
1. Blood means life
4
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood.
5
This was written in the Bible thousands of years ago Today, science tells us that blood does indeed sustain life Our blood carries oxygen and nutrients to every part of our body
6
2. Sin means death
7
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death.
8
Wages are something we deserve The only payment we deserve for sinning against God is death Not just physical death, but separation from God for ever
9
3. The shedding of blood became a means of forgiveness
10
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.
11
The shedding of animals’ blood was to provide atonement Literally, at-one-ment, bringing God and people together The animals died instead of the people who had sinned
12
4. The blood of animals is not really sufficient to pay for the sins of humans
13
Hebrews 10:4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
14
Animal’s know nothing of sin and guilt, they just follow instinct Humans are much more precious than animals in God’s eyes Only a human’s blood can pay for a human’s sin
15
5. God provided the only sacrifice that was good enough
16
Romans 3:25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood – to be received by faith.
17
Jesus Christ was God’s Son and was without sin He was fully human and was the perfect sacrifice on our behalf We need to trust in Him His blood had the power to really forgive sin
