Purpose of Grand Theft Auto 5 I think the main purpose of Grand Theft Auto is to make money from it, I also think they wanted to make a new game that’s different and extremely advanced for the time it was released. I think Grand Theft Auto was made too entertain their audience, I highly doubt that Rockstar created GTA 5 too educate their audience, I also doubt they made it to promote the brand because Rockstar was already a huge company by the time Grand Theft Auto 5 was released. The major difference between GTA 5 and previous Grand Theft Auto’s and other games is that for the first time ever you could switch between 3 characters at any point in the game. I think an important factor in video games is ‘identify’, meaning that characters look realistic and people feel as if they can relate to them. Another important feature in video games is ‘escapism’, this is very important and many people do play games like Grand Theft Auto to escape from reality and do unrealistic things like blowing things up, stealing things and general violence without any consequence.

The genre of Grand Theft Auto Its hard to say what genre Grand Theft Auto is but I think it is a action, adventure and comedy, this makes Grand Theft Auto 5 a hybrid game. Grand Theft Auto 5 is a sandbox game meaning that its an open world game giving you the option to free roam rather than having to do missions all of the time. I think action is the first genre that comes to mind is action because of all the fighting and violence involved. But, there is also a lot of comedy in Grand Theft Auto 5, especially with characters like Trevor. The adventure side of Grand Theft Auto is the missions, some missions are made too be more difficult and some are designed to be further away on the map, meaning that you discover new things on the map, new ideas. Grand Theft Auto 5 is a polysemic game, meaning that it has multiple meanings for different people, for example some people will play Grand Theft Auto 5 just for the online mode whereas, other people might play it just for the heists this all depends on the player likes.

Content The online game mode on Grand Theft Auto 5 is a massive part of the game and is one of the main factors that makes Grand Theft Auto such an advanced game for its time. The depth of missions as well does mean it takes along time to complete but pretty much every mission is enjoyable and interesting. Rather than just having one standard storyline, there is three different ways too go with the storyline because of having three main characters that you can switch between at any point in the game. The thing that makes Grand Theft Auto 5 so advanced is the fact it is so realistic because of the things you can do on the game, various activities include sports, racing, water sports, flying planes and many more things. The great thing about GTA 5 is there is so many things to do. GTA 5 online is probably the most advanced online mode available for video games at the minute, you can now personalize your online character and make the character look as similar too you as possible, this means the person playing can relate too their character. Having an online/multiplayer mode means players can enjoy playing with their friends rather than having to play on their own. Playing with friends or other people is more enjoyable because it makes it more realistic, some people probably wouldn't’t buy the game if it didn’t have an online game mode.

The sign says ‘Vinewood’ and its clearly meant to be a parody of the Hollywood sign. The style of the writing is exactly the same as the Hollywood sign, I would say it’s an perfect copy of the real thing, except its Vinewood not Hollywood. Rockstar Games’ Logo. This sign is a clear representation of Hollywood, this is something that recurs throughout the game. The game is based ion ‘Los Santos’ which is completely made up but its clear that it is a parody of L.A., a lot of things are very similar too real life L.A. for example there are Film Studios that look pretty much exactly like the ones you’d find in real life L.A. Doing a parody of the iconic ‘Hollywood’ sign gives the game that sense of realism, why would anyone want to play a game like Grand Theft Auto 5 if it was ridiculously unrealistic. Another reason why the sign is there is because it just wouldn't’t look right if it was not included, how could a company like Rockstar create a game based in a parody of L.A. without a parody of the iconic sign on the hill top?

The pictures around the edge are cartoon versions of screenshots from the game (more than likely too be hand drawn). I think they make a good cover but I would say that these pictures could mislead people who haven’t played the game before and they could expect those kind of graphics. The title of the game is clearly the main focus of the image. Its in large bold font and the ‘five’ is displayed as a logo, I think this is different and you don’t often see this. This would definitely attract my attention and I think that is why they did it, purely to attract the eye of their target audience. Trevor is made too look intimidating and tough, the camera shot does show that because the shot is a low shot it makes Trevor look a lot bigger than he actually is and he has a sniper rifle in his hands does make him look crazy. Similarly to the picture of Trevor, this shot of Franklin is a close up but it isn't as striking compared to Trevor's photo. Franklin has a gun in his hand so it is obvious that he is a criminal and it gives you an idea of the game content. They’ve purposely designed the front cover like a comic because it would attract the attention of their ideal target audience which is young adult males. Doing this style of game cover would 100% attract the attention of this target audience.
7
If you look closely you can see the Police car chasing the black car, this is a cropped version of the official Grand Theft Auto 5 cover. The Police car would indicate that you will get chased by the Police on the game, it also indicates that driving will be involved and if you have played the game you can tell that it is a massive factor of the gameplay. Once again Grand Theft Auto has made it obvious what the content of the game includes, the fact the police car is chasing the sports car shows that you will be causing trouble within and it shows that you wont be a perfect citizen. The target audience would be males around (15-30), usually this type of target audience want to drive the sports cars and want to be chased by police. I think this makes the cover appealing to their target audience, this would definitely catch my attention if I hadn't already played the game this would make me want too buy the game 100%.

Vinewood sign is a clear representation of the Hollywood sing, clearly meant to be a parody of the real life sign. The camera shot is a long shot, this way the main focus of the shot is the sports car but the ‘Vinewood’ sign is purposely put in the background of the shot. Doing this type of shot means that the objects that are in the shot look a lot bigger and catch your eye. For example the car is at the front of the shot, this is the first thing you would notice when looking at this shot.

Trailers This screenshot is a clear example of violence that occurs when playing Grand Theft Auto 5. It also stereotypes black males by showing gang rivalry, the use of guns and just general violence. This screenshot shows the use of weapons and the gangs that are in Grand Theft Auto 5, especially involving black males. The shot used is a medium shot, this means you can see the majority of the main person in the shorts body. It means when looking at it you will focus on his face, arms and chest but not his legs.
10
This shot shows Trevor as the crazy hillbilly he is, as a gamer watching this trailer I would expect Trevor to be insane and from playing the game I now know that he is how the trailer portrays him. The camera shot is a medium- close up, which is meant so you can see the emotions on Trevor's face and also see what he has in hands, in this case a pump shot gun. This really does go with the stereotype that Rockstar wanted to achieve with Trevor, they wanted him to be a crazy ‘redneck’ and I think with shots like this in the trailer, I think they have achieved that.

Pre-ProductionProduction Marketing Distribution Flowchart
12
Pre-Production Grand Theft Auto V was first announced by Rockstar Games on 25 October 2011, one week later the games first trailer was released. The development of GTA 5 was done by a team of more than 1,000 people. Rockstar had a budget of roughly $265 million too create and sell Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar would have then started too discuss the location for Grand Theft Auto 5, the location is called ‘Los Santos’, this is clearly a parody of Los Angeles. Location research would have then been looking at L.A. and then too later create it on the game, this would have been taking pictures in the area they want too set the game in they would also take note of what shops are where, basically every minor detail of the area is noted.
13
Production Grand Theft Auto 5 took six years too be released from when the creation first started. When production first started, Rockstar had over 1000 people working on Grand Theft Auto 5 alone. The development of Grand Theft Auto V stopped on 25 th August 2013 as the game was submitted too be officially made and then too later be released. Like I said before Rockstar needed to research the location that the game would be based in, this involves going to the rougher areas of L.A. like the ‘hood’ areas that are populated by gangsters for example going to places like this would have helped develop the character Franklin, it would have also helped give them inspiration for franklins character.
14
Marketing This is the official Grand Theft Auto 5 cover, this poster is in a train station, this is a great place too put the poster because thousands of people each day would walk by it and see it, this poster alone could make a huge number of people go out and by the game. This example of how GTA 5 was advertised is extreme and not many of these massive posters would exist around the world but this one is in L.A. because that’s where the game is meant to be set, L.A. is one of the most popular places in America and the world with millions of people living there. This massive poster would obviously attract peoples attention but the place L.A. is it is always crowed and extremely busy so this would be a great place too put a poster of this size. It would also be very good for Rockstars sales, which is the idea of adverts.
15
Distribution The two ways of the companies getting their games to the people that want them is firstly selling them in shops, nearly all supermarkets and high street shops will have agreed too sell Grand Theft Auto 5 when it was being released because a game with a reputation like Grand Theft Auto has means that shops will make profit of selling them because it will be in high demand when it comes out. The second way is too buy it online, many people do this because its quick and easy but the something that is even quicker is buying it off the market on your console and downloading it onto your console, this is becoming more and more popular as time goes on, in the future this will be the number one way too buy games rather than having a disc copy of the game.
