Focus and Ponder #2... Before We Begin… Imagine that Jesus is talking to you about your moral life. What do you think he would say to you? Write a note from Jesus to you about morality. Make it personally applicable to you. – Minimum 1 paragraph, 5-8 sentences, craft a well-developed, thoughtful response!!! WWJS – “What Would Jesus Say?” Hey, let’s talk!

what is “good” What does this mean? It is good for a thing to be what it is meant to be. Morally good actions are those that are in harmony w/ being a fully human person. FLASHBACK to last unit… What is moral? what is “good” What does this mean?

There are lots of ways to answer this question. Christians look to Jesus for the answer.

Fully Human??? “What does it mean to be fully human?” Our text explains that to be fully human means: *to have FAITH *to have DOUBT *to be LIVING *to be LOVING *and to have FREEDOM. What does being fully human mean to you? (Group Time)

Jesus was both fully divine & fully human. 100% human 100% God + = Jesus This is the mystery of the Incarnation!

Dignity 1. Other people are sacred. Jesus does not want a single person to be lost. = basic respect owed to all people b/c they are loved by God & made in God’s image

2. Keep your priorities straight. 100% commitment to the kingdom of God. You can’t serve God & $$$.

3. Love means you have to die to yourself, that is, be selfless. Self denial Service Being others-centered. -- This is a phrase from Kohlberg’s Stage 6. -- Different from being group-focused. If we serve Jesus, we may suffer for it. I knew this old man… he realized his whole life was for nothing & no one… he was almost crying saying that.

4. Love means you must respect others & commit yourself to their well-being. Love your enemies. Love your neighbors.

In the Christian tradition, the response to God’s love is to live a life of virtue. good habit that inclines one to live justly Moral virtues = -- We can acquire & nurture these through our own efforts. -- They help shape our character! Remember? DO YOU?!!

Cardinal virtues =Four stand out b/c the others build upon them. PRUDENCE Wise judgment TEMPERANCE Restraint, focus on wholeness Compassion, Other virtues of Jesus: respect for persons, forgiveness, honesty, mercy, peacemaking openness to others,

The guiding principle – bottom line – for Christians is LOVE. AGAPE to wish well AGAPE to wish well We are called to love those we like as well as those we don’t like. g h

-- lacking concern -- indifference -- not caring -- “without feeling”

APATHY -- 0 – not caring Apathy is the opposite of LOVE, not HATE. APATHY -- 0 – not caring

The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. -- Act on behalf of others. -- Seek out their good. -- Go out your way to love them. Christian morality means we should be actors, be doers.

Reactors wait for things to happen. -- They sit on the sidelines while life passes by. -- They get involved only when they are forced to by circumstances. DON’T BE LIKE THEM! Put your faith into action! Why would we want to help anyone? I know!!!

The heart of Christian morality is responsibility. Think about the parts of the word: -- We respond to God’s call. -- We allow Jesus to live in us. -- God’s free gift to us. -- We can say “yes!” We have the ability to respond to God & each other.
