NOTE-- Hosea was the prophet. Hoshea was the king. They are spelled so much alike it can be confusing. Hosea 1 “ 1 The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.” Hosea 1 “ 1 The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.”

He predicted the coming captivity, warned against the moral degradation of the kingdom, and denounced foreign alliances. But, Pekah King of Israel ignored the warning of Hosea and formed an alliance with Rezin King of Syria and Jotham, King of Judah to resist the powerful Assyrian empire who was demanding tribute.

Jotham died after 15 years as King of Judah. When his son Ahaz took the throne he rejected the alliance his father had with Pekah and Rezin. When Ahaz refused to join their confederacy they resolved to dethrone him and set in his stead the son of Tabeal upon the throne of David. Tiglathpileser was King of Assyria Jotham King of Judah Ahaz became King of Judah The struggle which ensued is commonly known as the Syro-Ephraimitic war (734 B.C.).

9 JUDAH ISRAEL SYRIA Sinai Cyprus Arabia Rezin was king of Syria Tiglathpileser was King of Assyria Rezin was killed 2 Kings 16 “ 9 And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.” Pekah King of Israel Then Hoshea made a conspiracy against Pekah, killed him and reigned in his stead. Pekah Murdered Hoshea King of Israel Ahaz was King of Judah Despite the warnings of prophets like Hosea, Israel made alliances with heathen nations, warred against Judah (their own brethren), and would not repent of idolatry. This is an account of how God punished them using their enemy Assyria.

10 JUDAH ISRAEL Sinai Cyprus Arabia Shalmaneser IV was King of Assyria King Hoshea refused to pay tribute to Shalmaneser IV. He relied upon So, the king of Egypt, to help defend him against Shalmaneser, but no help came. For 3 weary years Shalmaneser IV attacked Israel. Shalmaneser IV succeeded Tiglathpileser as King of Assyria. So King of Egypt Hoshea King of Israel

11 JUDAH ISRAEL Sinai Cyprus Arabia Shalmaneser IV King of Assyria Hoshea King of Israel 2 Kings 17:18 “Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.” Finally, after 3 years of Shamaneser IV and his Assyrian army laying siege against Israel, Sargon II, who succeeded Shalmaneser IV, carried away all of Israel to Assyria. King Hoshea was even taken captive. Sargon II King of Assyria Hoshea had reigned 9 years. He was the last King of Israel...

16 Hosea 1:9 “And the Lord said, ‘Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not My people and I am not your God.’” (NASB) Hosea 2:23 “And I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, and I will say to those who were not My people, You are My people!’ And they will say, ‘Thou art my God!’” (NASB)

17 Hosea 4:1,6 “Listen to the word of the Lord, I sons of Israel, For the Lord has a case against the inhabitants of the land, because there is no faithfulness or kindness or knowledge of God in the land…My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since youi have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (NASB)

18 Hosea 6:6 “For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” (NASB)

19 Hosea 8:7 “For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it yields no grain. Should it yield, stangers would swallow it up.” (NASB)
