T HE BRAIN The Nervous System
2
Y OUR B RAIN IS HARD TO WRAP YOUR HEAD AROUND 3lb Organ yet it controls soo0o much! Your spine and nerves work with your brain, so some responses from your body are done before your brain even knows it So do we think for ourselves? It is hard to admit if we are in control of our thoughts/actions/personalit y OR is it a natural reaction?
3
N EUROPSYCHOLOGISTS Study the brain and the rest of the central nervous system to better understand behavior Among many of their interests are: Foundations of consciousness (Chapter 5) Perception (Chapter 6) Memory (Chapter 10) Emotion (Chapter 11) Stress (Chapter 15) Mental Disorders (Chapter 16)
4
T HE N ERVOUS S YSTEM Function- gather and process info., produce responses to stimuli, and coordinate workings of different cells Even the jellyfish and the worm have beginnings of such a system In simple organisms (who do little more than move, eat, eliminate waste) may only have two nerve cells! Humans are Complex We dance, cook, and take psych courses! Billions of cells! Scientists divide this intricate network into 2 main parts: Central Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System (What do you think the difference is? Hear of peripheral vision?)
5
C ENTRAL N ERVOUS S YSTEM (CNS) What does it do? Receives, processes, interprets, and stores sensory information Tastes, sounds, smells, color, pressure on the skin, state of internal organs, etc. Sends messages to muscles, glands, internal organs CNS components: Brain & Spinal Cord (we will look more at the brain later) Spinal Cord- extension of the brain So we think with our spine too? Runs from the base of the brain through the center of the back- protected by bones (spinal column) Bridge between the brain and the parts below the neck
6
S PINAL C ORD C ONT. Can work without help of the brain!! “Spinal reflexes”- automatic / without effort Touch a hot iron- immediately pull away Your brain= “Wha..? What happened?” Nerve impulses tell your spinal cord- “HOT!” Spinal Cord- immediately sends a message telling muscles to contract and move your hand away from the iron Note- Spinal cord is the bridge for…? So the reflexes above (blinking/sneezing) involves the lower part of the brain- not the spinal cord Some reflexes can be brought under conscious control -train to keep your hand on the iron -don’t jerk that leg when the doctor taps your knee
7
P ERIPHERAL N ERVOUS S YSTEM (PNS) ( MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER – NO E OR I) What does it do? Handles the CNS’ input and output Components: Nervous system outside the brain, spinal cord, and nerves to even the tips you’re your fingies and toesies Without it- you’d be a radio without a receiver Sensory nerves-messages from skin, muscles, internal/external organs to spinal cord- then brain Motor nerves- carry orders from CNS to muscles, glands, internal organsto contract/secrete substances Including hormones- chemical messengers
8
S YSTEMS WITHIN THE PN-S YSTEM Somatic Nervous System- (bodily) Nerves connected to sensory receptors Enable you to sense the world Permit voluntary action- bug on your arm, turn off the light, write your name Autonomic Nervous System- (self-governing) Regulates functioning of blood vessels, glands, internal organs (stomach/bladder) See somebody you have a crush on- cheeks feel hot, hands get sweaty, heart pounds
9
N ERVOUS S YSTEMS WITHIN THE A UTONOMIC N ERVOUS S YSTEM Work together- in opposing ways (hence why they are both in the PNS and Autonomic systems yet separated) Sympathetic Nervous System Pumps you up Parasympathetic Nervous System Keep it under control
10
S YMPATHETIC N ERVOUS S YSTEM Like a car accelerator- mobilizing the body for action and input/output of energy Makes you blush, sweat, breathe deeply, push up your heart rate and blood pressure Whirls into action when you are in a situation where you need to fight, flee, or cope Fight or Flight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyUe9T h3lNM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyUe9T h3lNM
11
P ARASYMPATHETIC N ERVOUS S YSTEM Like the car brake- yet it does not stop the body, but slows things down to keep them running smoothly So you can conserve energy Ex. When you jump out of the way of a speeding motorcyclist, sympathetic nerves increase your heart rate and the parasympathetic nerves slow it down afterwards to keep its rhythm regular
12
W HAT TO DO N OW ? Answer Questions Go to page 105 and recreate the graphic organizer (Quick Quiz)- include the parts AND the description of what they do (you can look at the answers that are upside down) Go to page 106, draw and label the brain and spinal cord with the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Divisions. Then list what each does (which is provided) and draw at least 5 symbols/depictions of each (ignore the genital stimulation part- keep the class PG)
