1. Coastlands School News By the pupils of Coastlands Issue 20: Jan/Feb 2016 Our Annual Bird Watch A few weeks ago we took part once again in the RSPB Big Schools Bird Watch. Class One and Class Three went down to Sheila’s Peace to do it, while Class Two did it in groups around the school grounds. In Class Three, we saw 64 birds in total (that is about 20 more than last year). Also we saw a lot more small birds, like chaffinches and blue tits, this year. Isabella Thomas was very surprised when we saw a big pheasant fly over us on the way into the woodland. Class One have made some picture graphs using the data; in Year 5 and 6 they used the data for pie charts and Year 4 made bar graphs in Excel, using Hwb. Emilia Clarke said that she had a fun time at Sheila's Peace. National Number Day This year we took part in National Number Day for the first time. The day is all about celebrating numbers. Lots of us came to school with numbers on our clothes (even Mr Evans took part!). Then we did some number activities in class, and these were given to the comp to judge and see who had used the best maths. So here’s a little challenge for you... How many seconds are there in the month of February in a leap year? You may use a calculator! Brilliant Book Fair We were delighted earlier this term to have the return of the Book Fair at Coastlands. As you might be aware, we are making improving reading a big priority at the moment, so it was great to give everyone the opportunity to buy some lovely books. We had fun buying and reading the books. These are some of the books people bought: Star Wars, Minecraft, Monster High, Cookie, Tutankhamun, Toad Rage and Dinosaurs. Around £400 worth of books were bought, so this means that the school gets £400 of free books. Well done to everyone who came along and bought a book. Also, congratulations to everyone who has moved up a level in their Lexia reading. Lexia is an online programme to improve reading and spelling, which children in Class 2 and 3 have been trying out. If your child has been given a Lexia login try to make sure they go on it every day at home, even if it’s only for twenty minutes. Remember, though, that they need to do it on their own, with just encouragement from mums and dads (so don’t go telling them all the answers!). Don’t forget it’s World Book Day on Thursday. Come dressed as a character from a book and bring your favourite book to share! Triad Project We have started working with Sageston School and St. Florence School on lots of projects to do with digital competence. These are being lead partly by our digital Leaders, who are Ollie Warlow and Olivia Beal in Class 2, and Jenson Baldry and Sam Beegan in Class 3. Last month Class 3 went to Manor Park to take photos of the animals. Each child has since produced a fact file about an animal which we are sending to Manor Park in the form of QR codes. They will be put up around the park so people can scan them with their phones and devices and find out more about the animals. Class 3 parents: why don’t you get your child to show you their work on Hwb? Class 2 have been doing a project on digital photography. They went down to Dale to take photos, where they got very wet! They learned lots about Dale and have been learning to use some amazing new apps. Next, our digital leaders are going to show Class 1 how to create a blog. SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS Recently our school council went on a visit to County Hall. They had an interesting tour and a talk, finding out things about how the county council is run. Afterwards, Zac drew a great picture of his visit, which is now on display in the council offices. We hope to have one of the county councillors along to a school council meeting later in the term. Fab Fundraising! Thanks to everyone who supported the non- uniform day and cake/biscuit sale at the end of last half term. Class 3 raised just over £100 towards their Urdd residential trip to Glan Llyn in North Wales.

2. Junior Road Safety Officers Ethan Reed, Elliott, Jenson and Ewan are our JRSOs for this year. Part of their role is to help spread the road safety message within our school and community, and to highlight any road safety issues within our school and report any problems. So if you’re one of those parents who lets your child travel in the car with no seatbelt or car seat, or who drive out of the school gates with your child sitting on someone’s lap in the front seat (and yes, we have seen that!), remember: we’re watching! We want you and your child to be safe. E-Safety Messages Earlier this month it was Safer Internet Day. In Class 3 we did an e-safety quiz, then made up our own quizzes. WPC Thomas came in to talk to us about e-safety and cyber-bullying. In our classes we had some discussions about how we use the internet and about using the computer in a safe way, and we heard some surprising things. For instance, there are some children in our school who have their own social media accounts. Did you know that most of these sites – like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat – are only supposed to be used by people who are 13 and over, and to use Whatsapp you have to be 16? We were also worried to hear that there are some children (even children in Class One!) who are playing some very violent games which are meant for adults only and have an 18+ certificate. So parents, please help look after us and don’t let us play on games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. ECO COMMITTEE NEWS The Eco-committee have been working hard and have created their new Action Plan, with help from Mrs Burton. They are also running a competition to re- vamp our eco mascots. Earlier this term, four eco-minded pupils went to the Pembrokeshire Eco Schools Celebration Day at Pembrokeshire College. They took part in some interesting workshops and shared ideas with pupils from other schools. They told everybody about what they learned in assembly. Thank you to Emilia’s mum, Mrs Clarke, who went along with them. Just before half term we celebrated the WWF Green Hearts Day, where we decorated cakes and biscuits with green hearts on them to show how much we care for our planet. Wales, St. David, daffodil, leek, rugby, Snowdon, dragon, rain. CLASS ONE FARM VISIT Class One went to Trewarren Farm to look at the different machinery and different sized tyres. They had an interesting time but it was a long way to walk for little legs. Thanks to everyone who helped out that day. Cwl Cymraeg The Criw Cymraeg have been busy with their phrases of the week, adding to our celebration assemblies on Fridays. Important Welsh events coming up: Don’t forget to come to our St. David’s Day celebration in the school hall at 2pm on Tuesday. Any contributions towards our Fair Trade Cake Stall will be gratefully received. On Thursday evening a choir will be taking part in the Milford schools’ concert with Bois Y Frenni at Milford Secondary School. Mrs Davies will be taking a choir to compete in the Urdd Eisteddfod at Tenby on Monday March 7 th. Also, Urdd members can work at home to create artwork for the Urdd eisteddfod.
