3 So, what do we do now? South Carolina began working with online education and organized the SCVSP in 2006. Teachers that expressed an interest in working for the SCVSP had little training in online course development or teaching online courses. There was a need for online training and course development in order to move forward. Today’s online courses have the rigor of meeting the state standards and ISTE national technology standards.

4 Approach and Training SC has online registration for graduate level and re- certification courses. Approved by the Office of Teacher Certification Also offers workshops, seminars, and training in various areas of technology. Upcoming courses include:  Differentiating Instruction to Accommodate Learning Styles  Facilitating Learning in an Online Environment  Introduction to Moodle: Getting Started with Moodle, Part 1  Approaches and Tools for Developing Web-Enhanced Lessons  Classroom Assessment Enhanced by Technology  Best Practice Seminar: Part II (Kylene Beers and Robert Probst)

5 Goal: Build capacity to use online learning to meet local goals For: states, districts, schools, universities and others Background: Over 3000 online specialists trained in over 36 states (and 10+ Virtual Schools) since founding in 2000) Approach: Capacity building Learning Community Model Uses technology and new online/Web 2.0 tools for delivery Based on principles of effective teaching/PD About EdTech Leaders Online (ETLO)

10 SC Add-On Certification for Online Teaching Optional add-on certification Intended to enhance an educator's skills and knowledge beyond that required for traditional teaching. Purpose: To certify the individual to teach classes in an online environment. Going before the State Board of Education in November 2009 for approval.

11 SC Add-On Certification for Online Teaching Requirements Bachelor's degree Initial or professional certificate at the middle, secondary or preK-12 level Minimum qualifying score(s) on the content area examination(s) required by the State Board of Education Specialized Preparation (6 hours required) Facilitating Online Courses Effectively Effective Online Course Management Elective Courses (6 hours) Approaches and Tools for Developing Web-Enhanced Lessons Classroom Assessment Enhanced by Technology Differentiating Instruction to Accommodate Learning Styles Using Digital Portfolios to Foster Student Learning Learning and Teaching with Web 2.0 Tools South Carolina Online Resources NOTE: Required and elective coursework listed above may be waived and certification in Online Teaching granted for teachers who have successfully taught three online courses through an accredited educational institution or professional development program within three years of application (URL or access to current online courses required).

12 Online Learning: Some Lessons Must be based on principles of effective teaching/learning Content and pedagogy lead; technology follows Capacity-building approaches support sustainability Learning community model enables reflection and learning Online teaching is different – training is necessary! Provides important access to needed learning opportunities Enables ongoing support and follow-up

13 For the 2008-2009 year, the SCVSP experienced an unprecedented 80% growth in individual student enrollments when compared to the 2007-2008 school year. “Online learning is alive and well in SC--only going to get bigger and better.” -SC Course Designer
