Tener que + infinitive to express obligation or the commitment to do something Tengo que ir al dentista mañana. I have to go to the dentist tomorrow. El presidente tiene que hablar en el Senado. Hay que + infinitive to express “One should” or “It’s typically necessary” Hay que llegar a clase a tiempo. One should arrive to class on time. Hay que estudiar el vocabulario para recibir una “A” en el examen. It’s necessary to study the vocabulary in order to receive an A on the test.
5
Deber + infinitive to express duties or things that you are expected to do Translation: “should” Note: Deber has a subject, so we need to conjugate it. Debo trabajar el lunes. I should work on Monday. Debemos asistir a todas las clases. We should attend all classes. Los profesores deben preparar sus clases. The teachers should prepare their classes.
6
Using deber with a reflexive verb: Remember, deber is conjugated, so the reflexive pronoun still needs to change to me, te, nos, etc. Leave the second verb (what the person should do) in the infinitive, and place the reflexive pronoun on the end. Examples: Debo ducharme. Debes ponerte los zapatos. Raúl debe lavarse las manos.
