ScheduleMe by A Mighty Nice Company Ian Newcombe

The Problem  Popular online calendaring solutions do not interoperate  There is no way to see availability for users of other calendar platforms  Scheduling meetings can be difficult, often requiring many emails back and forth to find a time that works

The Solution  ScheduleMe can read availability on multiple platforms  Acts a a go between (middleware)  Allows users to know that all invitees have availability when scheduling a meeting

Scheduling Process User will choose invitees User Selects Duration of Event Choose When to Check For Availability Check Availability

Testing  In order to verify that the system works as designed, it was tested many times  Four email accounts were used (Exchange, Yahoo, Gmail, and iCloud)  Each account was used to create 10 meetings with all other accounts  During the process, it was verified that SMe did not allow meetings to be created when there was already an event scheduled

Testing  100+ meetings scheduled  Many permutations of scheduling were tried  (Google  Yahoo + Exchange, Yahoo  iCloud + Google, Exchange  Google, Etc.)  Communication with developers

Results Calendar Platform Read Events from Calendar InvitationsEase of Setup Exchange8104 iCloud826 Yahoo5108 Gmail109 Results are on a scale of 0-10

Overall Calendar PlatformRating (1-10) Exchange (10)Events add to calendar properly, Events read from calendar, Invitations recieved iCloud (6) Emails no received most of the time, reads events on calendar Yahoo (5) Events add to calendar properly, not able to read event on calendar unless all day event Gmail (9) Events add to calendar properly, reads calendar events, some invitations have different.ics file

Current Issues Exchange: Unable to add server for Exchange calendar at first Worked with developers to fix issue iCloud: Events on calendar are sometimes incorrectly read Invitations are not received from SMe During the testing process, a number of issues were discovered that will need to be fixed

 Gmail:  Invitations received when Gmail is the organizer don’t have “Quick Action” menu  Invitations received from any other organizer do have this menu  Yahoo:  Only reads all day events put on calendar within Yahoo  When trying to schedule event with Gmail, there are occasionally dates with nothing scheduled that will show no availability

Design of Goods & Services  Research what customers in the market want  Determine how your firm can develop products that your customers want  Compare against competitors  Recognize product life cycles  Introduction  Growth  Maturity  Decline

Developing a Product using a House of Quality (QFD) Diagram  Through market research, determine what the customer wants in a product Determine how you will make these wants part of the products design Then evaluate how well the wants are satisfied by the hows Rate (low, medium, high) the relationships between the hows Develop an importance rating for each of the customers’ wants Evaluate competing products Determine the desirable technical attributes and measure how well you and your competitors perform against these attributes

Putting It All Together

Survey  80 responses  UNH Students  5 Questions:  How often do you use a calendar to keep track of commitments?  Which calendar platform do you use the most?  If you are trying to plan an event and want to invite people, how do you do it?  What makes an app on your phone desirable to use?  What would make you want to use a calendar more often?

How often do you use a calendar to keep track of commitments?

Which calendar platform do you use the most?

If you are trying to plan an event and want to invite people, how do you do it?

What makes an app on your phone desirable to use?

What would make you want to use a calendar more often?  Responses ranged from “I use it all the time” to “Nothing”  Some people want better reminders  Prioritization of events  Simpler interface

Outcome  College students are not a target market for calendaring solutions  ScheduleMe needs to be easy to use

Competitors  Doodle offers a polling solution  Not a one step process  May not be able to find a time when everyone is free  Does not enable secure connection unless you pay  Ads unless you pay

Recommendations  Add “Created Meetings” screen that would allow users to see scheduled meetings and allow them to reschedule  Send back invitation accepts and push to organizer’s calendar  Add Contact Book  Design an automated system that would check each type of account on a regular basis  Would allow quick reaction to potential issues  Alert users to issues and progress of fix
