CH 10 SEC 4 ROOTS, STEMS, AND LEAVES
2
ROOTS KEY- ROOTS ANCHOR A PLANT TO THE GROUND, ABSORB H2O AND MINERALS FROM THE SOIL, AND SOMETIMES STORE FOOD. KEY- THE MORE ROOT AREA THE MORE A PLANT CAN ABSORB KEY-THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF ROOTS- 1.FIBROUS ROOT SYSTEM 2.TAPROOT SYSTEM
3
ROOTS FIBROUS ROOT- CONSIST OF MANY SIMILARLY SIZED ROOTS THAT FORM A DENSE, TANGLED MASS. TAKE MUCH SOIL WITH THEM WHEN YOU PULL THEM OUT OF GROUND. EX- LAWN GRASS
4
ROOTS TAPROOT system - ONE MAIN ROOT WITH SMALLER ROOTS THAT BRANCH OFF THE MAIN ROOT. EX CARROTS
5
STEMS KEY- THE STEM PRODUCES BRANCHES, LEAVES, AND FLOWERS. KEY- IT CARRIES SUBSTANCES BETWEEN THE PLANTS ROOTS AND LEAVES KEY- THE STEM ALSO PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE PLANTS AND HOLDS UP THE LEAVES SO THEY ARE EXPOSED TO THE SUN.
6
STEMS KEY- THERE ARE 2 TYPES 1.HERBACEOUS STEMS 2. WOODY STEMS. HERBACEOUS STEM- NO WOOD OFTEN SOFT. EX- DAISIES
7
STEMS WOODY STEMS- SEVERAL LAYERS OUTER IS BARK EX- TREES
8
LEAVES KEY- THE STRUCTURE OF LEAVES IS ADAPTED FOR CAPTURING THE SUN’S ENERGY AND CARRYING OUT PHOTOSYNTHESIS. COPY FIGURE 21 P.384 KEY- THE CHEMICAL EQUATION FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS CAN BE SUMMARIZED BY THE FOLLOWING Carbon dioxide(CO2)+ water(H20) + light energy = sugar and oxygen(O2)
9
Transpiration- THE PROCESS BY WHICH WATER EVAPOARTES FROM LEAVES
10
LEAVES KEY – plants can close the stomata, OPENINGS at the bottom of their leaves, to prevent from drying out.
