Is a collaborative venture involving industry, the research and education communities, and the federal government. Funding: Government of Canada (Industry Canada) Mission: accelerate the development and use of advanced networks in Canada, through the – funding of technology and application development and – design, development, deployment and operation of an advanced national research network: CA*net 4 Primary stakeholders: universities, federal labs, provincial research networks, colleges, broader research community, carriers, IT sector, SMEs, broader education sector, broader health sector, provinces

5. CA*net 4 supports diverse R&E communities and needs distributed org: NRC-net virtual org: HEPnet Canada University CERN University e-science: TRIUMF -CERN and -Tier2s Grid backplane: WestGrid Dept CA*net 4 IP network

7. native IPv6 peerings > 70% of domestic research nets (ORANs): BCnet, NETERA (Alberta), ORION (Ontario), RISQ (Québec), Federal GigaPoP, PEI GigaPoP, ACORN-NS > international: 6TAP, AARnet, Abilene, ASnet, GEANT, GLORIAD, KREONet2, NYSERnet, WISCnet

Policy > CANARIE prefix 2001:410::/32 > have allocated /40 to ORANs, but encourage ORANs to get their own blocks from ARIN > accept ORAN prefixes > in summary closely mirrors IPv4 policy > one exception is that commercial prefixes are also accepted (until such time as Cdn ISPs start offering IPv6 services)

9. IPv6 multicast > Juniper routers recently upgraded to Junos 7.2R2.4 > supports SSM, and ASM with embedded RP > presently rolling out IPv6 multicast in backbone > next steps wil be to establish native IPv6 multicast peerings

10. IPv6 users > NRC IPv6 news server > CRC participated in the distributed Isabel workshop over IPv6, held in Madrid > CRC planning to participate in NGN workshop in late September/early October via IPv6 multicast
