7. Explain what the term “PLANT FIBRE” is referring to?
9
S CIENCE 7: U NIT B T OPIC 2: S TRUCTURE AND A DAPTATIONS Why do we need to look at the structure/adaptations of plants? We need to understand the structure of plants and how they adapt in order to match the plants with conditions where they can grow well. WHY? FOOD PRODUCTION! FIBRE TRANSPORTATION MEDICINE
10
S NAP C HAT S CIENCE What is the difference between a perennial and an annual?
11
T HE S TRUCTURE OF A P LANT Plants have 3 main parts Roots Stem Leaves/Flowers
12
R OOTS We can compare roots to icebergs Approximately up to 1/3 of a plant’s roots are hidden underground
13
R OOTS AND THEIR R OLES 1. They absorb water and minerals 2. They support/anchor the plant 3. Store food
14
T HERE ARE T WO M AIN T YPES OF R OOTS 1. Tap roots 2. Fibrous roots
15
T APROOTS Single, prominent root with numerous small roots coming out of it known as ROOT HAIRS Root hairs Increases the ability of the plant to absorb water/nutrients from the soil Examples: Most trees, large desert plants, dandelions, moss campion
17
F IBROUS R OOTS Shallow system of similar-sized roots that can quickly soak up moisture Examples: duckweed
19
R OOT C ROPS Humans take advantage of certain types of roots for food Examples Carrots Beets Turnips Radishes Parsnips Cassava Tapioca
20
Effective since the root crops can grow in a short period, have deeper roots, and can be stored Why do they have a “large” root? Root vegetables are generally storage organs Stored energy in carbohydrates (starch)
21
Y OUR T ASK Take a blank sheet of paper Split it in half On both sides you are going to create your own plant with the three main parts of a plant labeled On side must demonstrate a tap root while the other one demonstrating a fibrous root (Make sure each side is labeled and defined properly) Please colour! 10 marks /2 marks for labeling fibrous or taproot /2 marks for proper definitions/descriptions of roots /6 marks for labeling of structures
