WHAT IS IT? ● Post WWII movement in the 1940s and 1950s ● came from America, developed in NYC ● 1st American art movement to gain int’l acclaim and make New York the center of the western art world -- not Paris this time! ● all about expressing one’s subconscious

“We agree only to disagree. ” - Writer Irvin Sandler’s view of the movement. It was the unofficial motto/rule of Abstract Expressionism. (like Fight Club, but more artsy)

CHARACTERISTICS ● takes inspo. from surrealism ● colorful ● spontaneity, chaos (but they were generally planned) ● big canvases, “all over” approach ● abstract depiction. it’s all in the name
