The pros and cons of the BVHP food environment PROS SF Wholesale Produce Market located in the neighborhood Alemany Farmers’ Market is nearby (though Bayview Market closed) Many community gardens and plots within the neighborhood Many churches and food pantries The growing number of healthy restaurants The opening of Fresh and Easy Market in August 2011 CONS Not enough grocery stores- only 2 for 32,000 residents 1 Only 60% live within ½ mile of a grocery store (SF avg is 84%, many neighborhoods 100%) 1 The liquor stores and corner stores on every block Fast food chains and unhealthy prepared food options Lack of healthy and nutritious food at grocery stores Lower household income and education levels are barriers to obtaining nutritious food Source: SF Dept of Public Health and SF Food Systems, 2008
