Introduction to Unit 2 There is a sheet of paper and an atlas at each desk. Using a map of South America, choose a country to draw. Using the MYP Global Context paper on your desk ask questions about the country your chose using the global context, fairness and development. You will work with the students at your table. You have five minutes.

South America is the 4 th largest continent. It is located in the northern, southern and western hemispheres.

The cultural region “Latin America” includes both South and North America. There are 42 countries in Latin America. Major countries include Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

The Amazon has 1.4 billion acres of rainforest, is home to 10% of all the species in the world, and creates 20% of the world’s oxygen.

Countries in the region work to improve their economies through free trade agreements. This helps increase trade and creates jobs.

Free Trade Remember, free trade is a policy followed by some international markets in which countries' governments do not restrict imports from, or exports to other countries.

The Andes Mountains are the world longest mountain range (on land), many of the mountains are also volcanos!

A huge part of the region’s economy is based on tourism, specifically ecotourism.. This is when tourism focuses on the environment, like trips exploring nature on foot or horseback
