2 Technology Systems Development Programme (TSDP) Supports activities aimed at developing and integrating technologies to evolve technology systems both in the advanced/emerging areas and in traditional sectors/areas. Feasibility of fresh ideas/ concepts is assessed for their potential conversion into useful technology/product. Stresses on clearly identifying the needs for development of the technology and transfer of technology to the industry (developmental effort could be useful to the target beneficiary i.e. people at large).

3 Objectives  Develop and integrate technologies following a holistic approach in identified areas  Promote application of modern/advanced technologies to socio-economic problem solving  Promote modernization of traditional technologies, tools and skills  Facilitate enhancing quality and performance of the traditional/non-traditional items  Encourage developments in application of R&D activities  Promote activities aimed at improving technology, technique, material, methods and other appropriate activities helpful for development of technology status in identified areas.

4 Intervention of Science and Technology in Traditional Crafts  Increases contribution of Scientific and Technological progress to Economic growth.  Promotes local industries to pick up Latest Technology from R & D Institutions.  Promotes the Integration of Science and Technology in the daily lives of the people.  Identifies Research Areas and Emerging Technologies that benefits Rural Areas.

5 TECHNOLOGY INTERVENTION STRATEGIES  APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY Technology suitable for use in a particular location for effectively achieving the intended goals.  ALTERNATE TECHNOLOGY Environmentally friendly and offers many benefits to community.

7 INTERVENTION STRATEGIES - 2  Participation of local community  Establishment of linkages between R&D Units, NGOs and local population.  Demonstration of technology initiatives at micro-level  Creating local industrial base  Training of community and public education  Networking of similar communities

8 AREAS OF INTERVENTION - 1  Selection & characterization of raw materials  Introduction of new tools & techniques  Increase efficiency of tools & equipments  Mechanization/automation of production process  Introduction of quality control and safe operating procedures

9 AREAS OF INTERVENTION - 2  Introduction and application of new scientific ideas, concepts, and information in production and other processes  Improvements in finishing operation for better decorative presentation  Improved packaging and transport.

10 Pre-workshop on Intervention of Science and Technology in Traditional Crafts To identify the problems of the artisans and small scale industries in and around Coimbatore and formulate the project proposal to DST for funding Problem proposers : NGO’s / representatives of local community Solution providers : Scientists from educational institutions Executors : Manufacturers End users : Artisans, community and small scale industries

11 Procedure Presentation by you (14 th Dec. 2012) Suggestions from review committee Preparation of conceptual proposal (one or two pages) Importance of the problem Objectives Methodology Deliverables Budget Conceptual proposals to DST core committee (by Organizers) Presentation before the Core committee by you (Feb. 2013) Suggestions from DST core committee Submission of the improved version of the proposal to DST in prescribed format with letter from manufacturers/executors You are called by DST for final presentation (in 3 months) Final decision by DST core committee
