fdtl5 FDTL5 project V-ResORT : A Virtual Resource for Online Research Training
2
fdtl5 Overview Aims Vision & Background Partners Activities Resources Research Scenarios of use
3
fdtl5 Aims To share and build new understandings and practices in postgraduate research training in education. To increase the confidence and competence of those involved in social science postgraduate research training in the utilisation of multimedia and online learning and teaching materials To assess the potential for transferability across the social sciences

fdtl5 Background Research methods teaching and learning: Effective on-line support E-research: using multimedia for research methods teaching and learning
7
fdtl5 Research methods: effective online support Two events were held as part of the project A workshop at the ESCalate Research Methods for Research Students conference, Institute of Education, London - June 2002 A one day conference was held at Birkbeck College, University of London - September 2002
8
fdtl5 Outcomes A full report on the ESCalate website; Recognition of the need to share and further develop effective pedagogy; Recognition of the ways online approaches could go beyond text based materials to provide: Authentic narrative case studies of the research process; Interactive and flexible learning that could meet the needs of lecturers, supervisors and students.
9
fdtl5 E-Research project Interactive multimedia resources for online learning in the teaching of research methods developed at Sheffield in 2002-3 through an in-house teaching and learning grant Need for wider evaluation and further pedagogic and technological development to establish proof of concept
10
fdtl5 E-research:
12
fdtl5 Evaluation Identified a need for : More systematic coverage of topics; Clarification of context of use; Depth and focus of video narratives; Interactivity: engagement through tasks and communication; scaffolding; Navigation and search facilities required; Transcripts of video narratives required; The materials to be web-based.

Approaches and Paradigms Action Research PLANACTOBSERVEREFLECT develop a PLAN of action to improve something ACT to implement the plan OBSERVE the effects of the action in context REFLECT on those effects and use to restart process
28
fdtl5 Activities Creation of website www.v-resort.ac.uk Expert group to advise on conceptual framework and choice of case studies Local workshops to disseminate the project, consider scenarios of use and consider customisation Evaluation of the use of materials, the tutor and learner experience Research into the context for learning and factors affecting integration of the materials
29
fdtl5 Research Methods Conceptual Framework Where do ideas for research come from? What is the aim and purpose of a research project? What theoretical and methodological approaches might be taken? How are research projects designed and conducted? How is research reported and communicated to a range of audiences What happens to research once it has been completed?
30
fdtl5 Conceptual Framework navigation
31
fdtl5 The new website Launch June 2006 Has clearer navigation to project information, learner and tutor resources sections Includes skills and resources sections under each of the conceptual framework questions Has a registration form and tracking – to support the evaluation/research
32
fdtl5 What resources will be available? End of April 2006 Four full video narratives Linda Taylor: Instructional language in Modern Foreign Language classrooms (Nottm) Louis Poulson: Teachers understandings of effective literacy practice in classrooms (Bath) Paty Paliocaster: Inclusion in UK classrooms (Canterbury CC) Gregg Brooks: Quantitative research project - data anylsis using SPSS (Sheffield) Discussants Skills Focus group interactive video Intro to SPSS and NVivo
33
fdtl5 Research Research into impact – case studies The ways the materials are used Students Lecturers Using activity theory as a framework for analysis of the contexts for learning
34
fdtl5 Dissemination Approach is context for learning sensitive Work with partners through individuals who are teaching research methods Customisation: Partners can offer to add materials to the website o A video narrative, a skills item, a resource Questions for you? How might you use this resource? How might you want it customised?
35
fdtl5 Dissemination: Scenarios of use - Sheffield Blended learning modes: F2F + discussion F2F + online group discussion. F2F + self study Blended learning mode to support Masters and Doctoral students o Singapore: Introduced in F2F sessions using one classroom based video narrative – exploring how to build a research methodology around classroom practice. o Caribbean: To be used as part of two modules 1. Foundation module Introducing Educational Research 2. Teaching, learning and assessment where the focus is action research
