Biology EOC Review – Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration The answers – Copy the yellow

1) What are the main differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration? A) Aerobic – uses oxygen (O 2 ) –much more effective at making ATP –Happens in the mitochondria B) Anaerobic – NO O 2 !! –Very ineffective 2) What is alcoholic fermentation ? What are the products? What types of cells do this? Anaerobic process, happens when plant or fungal cells have no O 2. The products are CO 2, alcohol, & a little ATP.

3) What type of fermentation might be used in your own muscle cells when they do not get enough oxygen? What might this cause? Lactic acid fermentation (anaerobic) Causes muscle cramps 4) What type of fermentation does yeast use? What might it produce? Alcoholic fermentation (anaerobic) Produces alcohol, CO 2, and a little ATP

5) Equation for Cellular Respiration: O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6  CO 2 + H 2 O ReactantsProducts oxygencarbon dioxide glucosewater ATP 6) What is chemosynthesis? Where might it be used? converting chemical energy into glucose places with no sunlight

7)Equation for Photosynthesis: CO 2 + H 2 O  O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6 Sunlight ReactantsProducts carbon dioxideoxygen waterglucose

8) Describe the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the carbon cycle. Photosynthesis Pulls CO 2 out of atmosphere – CO 2 is a reactant Decreases global warming Who does it? –Plants, plant-like protists, algae Where: chloroplast Cellular respiration Releases CO 2 into atmosphere –CO 2 is a product Who does it? –ALL living things Plants, plant-like protists, fungi, animals, bacteria… Where: mitochondria

Where does photosynthesis and cellular respiration occur? How do you know?

Card Sort Activity Listen carefully and arrange you’re the cards on your desk accordingly:

Practice Makes Perfect WORD CARDS PHOTOSYNTHESIS Place the reactants on the left side of your desk. Place the products on the right side of your desk. Carbon DioxideGlucose WaterOxygen

Practice Makes Perfect WORD CARDS PHOTOSYNTHESIS Arrange your cards into the chemical equation for photosynthesis. Carbon Dioxide + Water  Glucose +Oxygen Water + Carbon Dioxide  Oxygen + Glucose

Practice Makes Perfect CHEMICAL FORMULA CARDS CELLULAR RESPIRATION Place the reactants on the left side of your desk. Place the products on the right side of your desk. C 6 H 12 O 6 H 2 O CO 2 O 2 36 ATP

Practice Makes Perfect CHEMICAL FORMULA CARDS CELLULAR RESPIRATION Arrange your cards into the chemical equation for cellular respiration. C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O + 36 ATP O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6  H 2 O + CO 2 + 36 ATP

Photosynthesis Keep your study guide in the pocket of your folder! Take out your cell phone and go to Nearpod.com You can play the game from the internet, or an app if you prefer. Get ready to type in the class PIN. Make sure that you are holding your phone/ipad sideways during the presentation.
