2 Module 1 Developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills that young people need to effectively ask for help. Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3 Lesson 4 Aim: Pupils should develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills to identify and talk about abusive behaviour. Aim: Pupils should develop good strategies to ask for help in order to resist controlling or abusive behaviour. Aim: Pupils should practice and share good strategies in asking for help in order to resist controlling or abusive behaviour. Aim: To “ Prepare young people for adult life by helping them to develop knowledge of how to access further advice and support.”. This is a requirement identified by OFSTED in their 2013 report.

3 Module 1 - Lesson 1 Scene 1 – You can’t wear that Scene 2 – Text control Objectives: Develop knowledge about different forms of abuse. Identify appropriate words to describe positive responses to controlling behaviour. Discuss the behaviour of the characters in the films using the appropriate language to describe positive responses to unwanted or controlling behaviour. Discuss the importance of asking for help and the difference that help makes to the characters in the films, especially Olivia and Danielle. __________________________________________________________ Materials and Method: Starter Activity – Discussion on dating violence. Handout 1.1: ACADV Wheel. Video: ‘You can’t Wear That’ – large group discussion. Video: 'Text control' – small group discussion. Handout 1.2: Word list. Handout 1.3: Activity on sentence completion and word-grid.

4 Module 1 - Lesson 2 This lesson focuses on ‘Face Up’ CD Rom Storyboard for Danielle. Objectives: Discuss the difference between Olivia, who is supported by her friends, and Danielle, who has to respond alone. How does this impact on their ability to ask for help? Pupils should identify a support network for Danielle / themselves in the place of Danielle. Create storyboards to describe positive strategies that Danielle might use to get help, so that she doesn’t have to respond alone. __________________________________________________________ Materials and Method Starter Activity: Large group discussion comparing Danielle and Olivia. Handout 2.1: 'Circle of support' exercise. Handout 2.2: Exercise on using appropriate body language and phrases. Handout 2.3: Storyboard: 'You can’t wear that‘.

5 Module 1 - Lesson 3 This lesson continues to focus on ‘Face Up’ CD Rom Storyboard for Danielle. Objectives: Share the strategies that pupils have developed in their storyboards. Role Play using both positive and then negative communication strategies. Analyse the merits of these strategies through large group discussion. ______________________________________________________ Materials and Method: Starter Activity: Practice conversation Role Play. Handout 3.1: Identifying appropriate body language and phrases. Plenary: Key factors to be considered when asking for help.

6 Module 1 - Lesson 4 Research external organisations that might provide help to people in controlling or abusive relationships. Objectives: Identify people and resources that might help pupils to respond to controlling behaviour. Use the internet to research organisations that might provide help and support. Share the information that pupils discover through their research by means of short presentations. _________________________________________________________ Materials and Method: Starter Activity: Reflect on who pupils might turn to for help. Video: 'It’s Ok sis‘. Research activity Handout 4.1: Providing links and questions on research. IT Suite

7 Module 1 Summary Pupils will have the knowledge and skills to enable them to identify and talk about abusive behaviour. Pupils will have developed good strategies in asking for help in order to resist controlling or abusive behaviour. Pupils will have practiced and shared effective strategies in asking for help in order to resist controlling or abusive behaviour. Pupils will know how to access further advice and support.
