ROMANTICISM Definition: Romans ( French) vernacular language. Historical Development : 17 th century it means imagination, factious, fabulous, or downright extravagant. 18 th Century description of pleasing qualities in landscape (nature). Romanticism: Important literary movement in Western Europe as a reaction to Neoclassicism ( emphasis is on emotion rather than reason). It is a break from traditions and conventions towards individuality and experimentation. It is a phenomenon of immense scope ( Literature, politics, history, philosophy & arts) The roots of Romanticism occurred in Germany & spread to Western Europe. The publication of The Lyrical Ballads 1798 by Wordsworth & Coleridge marked the beginning of the Romantic Movement in Literature.
