Biology Concepts with Imbedded IPC TEKS PowerPoint # 2 These IPC TEKS are the ones they did poorly on the Benchmark.

1A: The student is expected to demonstrate safe practices in field and lab investigations. Which of these symbols represents a corrosive chemical? A. B. C. D. The correct answer is B. Answer A is flammable; C is biohazard; D is compressed gas.

2D: The student is expected to communicate valid conclusions. Graphs of the data of the mosquitoes in a certain area over a 10 year period look like the picture. What can you conclude about the mosquitoes? A. Something is killing medium sized mosquitoes. B. Something is separating the two populations. C. Something is increasing the numbers of short mosquitos. The correct answer is A. The graph shows the numbers of 2 cm. long mosquitoes is being depressed.

4B The student is expected to investigate and describe applications of Newton’s Laws. Which of the following is a description of Newton’s First Law? A. It takes the ciliate the same amount of force as its own mass in order to start moving. B. In order to go faster, the ciliate has to swim harder. C. In order to slow down, the ciliate has to apply a negative force. D. When the ciliate moves forward, the water moves backward. The correct answer is C. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

5A The student is expected to demonstrate wave types and their characteristics. What type of wave is a nerve impulse as shown in the picture?? A.Mechanical B.Electromagnetic C.Matter The correct answer is A. Why is the correct answer A? Because a nerve impulse travels by the movement of molecules.

5 (B) The Student is expected to: demonstrate wave interactions including interference, polarization, reflection, refraction and resonance.  What is happening to the light to cause the rabbit’s eyes to glow? A.Light is reflected. B.Light is polarized C.Light is refracted. D.Light is resonated. The answer is A. Light is being reflected from the back of the rabbit’s eye.

6(B) The student is expected to: investigate and demonstrate the movement of heat through solids, liquids, and gasses by convection, conduction and radiation. This is a picture of a buzzard flying. Buzzards fly in circles due to: A.Convection B.Radiation C.Conduction The correct answer is A. The sun heats the air which rises in convection currents called thermals. The buzzard find these and soar upwards without having to flap their wings.

6(F) The student is expected to: investigate and compare series and parallel circuits. Many of these dogs have paralyzed back legs and use wheelchairs to get around. Is this analogous to a series or parallel circuit? Circuits in series will shut down if even one part of it is interrupted. Circuits in parallel will continue to function even when damaged. Since the rest of the animal is unaffected, the paralysis of a single body part would be analogous to a parallel circuit.

7(E) The student is expected to: classify samples of matter from everyday life as being elements, compounds or mixtures This is a model of a sugar molecule. Is it a: A.Element B.Compound C.Mixture The answer is B, compound. You can not separate the parts of this model without taking it apart. Likewise, you can’t take apart a compound without breaking bonds which changes it into something else.

9(A) The student is expected to: relate the structure of water to its function as the universal solvent.  Why is water polar? A.It is bent. B.It contains oxygen. C.It has unequal charges. D.It is covalently bonded. The correct answer is C. Water is negatively charged at one end and positively charged at the other.

9(A) The student is expected to: relate the structure of water to its function as the universal solvent. In the picture it shows sugar and water mixed together. Why doesn’t the sugar reconnect up with the other sugar molecules to form a solid? Because the charged ends of the water are attracted to their opposites on the sugar and pull the sugar apart. The sugar can’t reconnect with other sugars because the water gets in the way.

9(B) The student is expected to: relate the concentration of ions in a solution ot physical and chemical properties such as pH, electrolytic behavior and reactivity. When hydrogen ions are in low concentration the solution is: A.Acidic (below 7) B.Neutral (7) C.Basic (above 7) The correct answer is c. Low concentration of H+ ions is more basic and has numbers greater than 7.
