4 IBM Cloud Computing: Introduction: Platform for Smarter Planet Smart Work Smart Work How can we work smarter supported by flexible and dynamic processes modeled for the new way people buy, live & work? “Data is exploding and it’s in silos” “New business & process demands ” “Our resources are limited” New Intelligence How can we take advantage of the wealth of information available in real time from a multitude of sources to make more intelligent choices? I Need Insight I Need to Work Smart “My infrastructure is inflexible and costly” Dynamic Infrastructure How do we create an infrastructure that drives down cost, is intelligent and secure, and is just as dynamic as today’s business climate ? I need to respond quickly Green & Beyond I Need Efficiency How do we drive greater efficiencies, compete more effectively, and respond more quickly by taking action now on energy, the environment, and sustainability?

25 Mobile & Cloud Computing
26
26 Mobile & Cloud Computing: Overview
27
Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is the usage of cloud computing in combination with mobile devices MCC refers to an infrastructure where both data storage and the data processing happen outside of the mobile device. Mobile cloud applications move the computing power and data storage away from the mobile device and into the cloud. Alternatively, MCC can be defined as a combination of mobile web and cloud computing Because of advancement in mobile devices, each today has a browser and hence access to the internet Several mobile network providers such as Vodafone and Verizon started to offer cloud computing services Popular mobile applications include: Mobile commerce, Mobile healthcare, Mobile learning, Mobile gaming, and Mobile computing. 27 Mobile & Cloud Computing: Overview
28
28 Mobile & Cloud Computing: Overview
29
Cloud can be used to overcome obstacles in mobile computing: Extending battery lifetime Improving data storage capacity and processing power Improving reliability In addition MCC inherits some advantages of clouds for mobile services: Dynamic provisioning Scalability Multi-tenancy Ease of Integration 29 Mobile & Cloud Computing: Advantages of MCC
30
Issues in Mobile Communication Side: Low Bandwidth Availability Heterogeneity: network heterogeneity in terms of wireless network interface Issues in Computing side: Computing offloading: code compilation offloading may consume more energy than that of local processing Security: protecting user privacy and data secrecy is a key to maintain consumers’ trust in the mobile platform Efficiency of data access Context-aware mobile cloud services: service provider monitoring the user preferences 30 Mobile & Cloud Computing: Issues of MCC
31
31 Summary and Conclusions
32
32 IBM Cloud Computing + Mobile & Cloud Computing Summary and Conclusion: Major vendors (IBM, HP, Microsoft) are becoming Cloud Service Providers. In addition, most commercial products are becoming cloud enabled, i.e., can be deployed in the cloud There are different positioning from public to private to hybrid clouds offerings Mobile computing is a convenient candidate for cloud computing as you can access your cloud service on-the-go Cloud offer advantages to mobile computing On the other hand MCC has issues both in the mobile communication side as well as on the computing side Mobile cloud is the future
