HAN DYNASTY SCIENCE Astronomers recorded comets, discovered why moon shines, solar eclipses Invention: seismograph- an instrument for detecting earthquakes Invention : magnetic compass- an instrument for determining direction Homes, temples should be north or south for luck Lodestone: a type of iron ore Ancient Chinese seismograph (If there is an earthquake, the copper ball inside will drop out from the mouth of one dragon and fall right into the mouth of the toad below. (There are eight dragons representing eight directions.) From the falling direction of the ball, we can judge where an earthquake may happen.)
