1 GTIN Review
2
2 Trade Item definition Trade Item - Any product or service upon which there is a need to retrieve pre-defined information and that may be priced or ordered or invoiced at any point in any supply chain
3
3 Global Trade Item Number Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the new term for the 14-digit data structure to uniquely identify trade items (products and services) within the EANUCC system Note: this is a new term only, not a standards change
4
4 Why this GTIN stuff? Consistent terminology globally eases understanding Global trade is increasingly important Managing the movement of products and services through the entire supply chain, NOT just at point-of-sale

5 Global Trade Item Number Data Structures
6
6 Global Trade Item Number Globally unique 14- digit number to identify trade items (product or service) EAN/UCC-14, EAN/UCC-13, UCC-12, and EAN/UCC-8 are the data structures within GTIN UCC-12(U.P.C.) EAN/UCC-13 EAN/UCC-14 EAN/UCC-8 GTIN
7
7 GTIN Field Definition The GTIN is represented in a 14-digit database field Make 14 by adding zeroes to the front if the GTIN data structures contains only 8-digits, 12-digits or 13-digits Examples: ‘00” + UCC-12 ‘0’ + EAN/UCC-13
8
8 Data Structures - EAN/UCC-14 14 Total Digits 1 - Indicator (Packaging Indicator) –If zero then a UCC-12, EAN/UCC-8, EAN/UCC-13 data structure is present (right justified, zero filled left) –digit 1 to 8 indicates a packaging level of the base GTIN (Base GTIN is the UCC-12, EAN/UCC-13 or EAN/UCC-8 of a lower packaging level for the product) –9 indicates a variable measure item 12 = EAN.UCC Company Prefix + Item Reference 1 = Check digit

10
10 Assignment Considerations The manufacturer or brand owner determines how to assign GTINs Private label products use the GTIN of the label owner not the manufacturer The receiver (retailer) depends on the manufacturer or brand owner to ensure uniqueness
11
11 Data Structure Review Unique trade items have unique GTINs –Different products have UNIQUE GTINs –Retail unit and case of the product MUST have UNIQUE GTINs –Intermediate packages MUST have UNIQUE GTINs –Different size case packs of the same product MUST have UNIQUE GTINs
