Gene Information GUI By David Bittner
2
Goal of GUI The website Genecards.org is a database of all known genes that collects data from dozens of sources The problem is that there is a great deal of information for every Gene My GUI takes data and better organizes it as well as display it graphically
3
GUI Demo
4
Input Data The user input is simple, just type the gene symbol of the gene you wish to know more about User Input: Chemokine(C-C motif) ligand 1 CCL1 From there program reads input data from website from web based data Program inputs.tiff,.txt and.pdb
5
GUI Flow Chart User inputs specific gene symbol into the edit text box Program finds and downloads data from 4 websites that where gene cards has collected data Data automatically displayed on GUI or by clicking on axes to display figures/graphs
7
Data Structures Cont. getmrnagraph.pdb file to 2 cell arrays to plot getchromosome.png image file getpapers.txt file getsummary string getinteractions.png image file and string
8
Result of GUI Easier to obtain selected data from GUI than to search for it on genecards and other databases Have a better understanding of Gene and protein functions Gene interaction Gene expression levels throughout body
9
Project Challenges/Unsolved Problems Can only search by symbol Had problems with code creating direct link to articles GUI takes some time to run, find a way to run in faster Parts of GUI only run once had problems with clear function
