Differentiating with Learning Menus Harriett Lambourne

Learning Menus The teacher uses learning menus for her students to learn her history lesson These learning menus allow students to work at their own pace which in turn allows them to fully understand the main topic of the lesson A student stated that she liked the learning menus because she does not feel rushed like many other times when she is doing a project The learning menus consist of an appetizer, first course, second course, and dessert

Appetizer Students get to choose an appetizer of their choice and there are different literacy options that are being addressed After completing the appetizer students go over to their teacher and receive a grade after that they can go on to their first entrée

First Entrée The first entrée is where students have to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the lesson. One boy was formatting his first entrée in bullet points making sure it was clear he understood the lesson Once the entrée is completed students are required to test out and complete the quiz, they cannot move on unless they do this By doing this Ms. Vagenas is preparing her class for multiple assessments. I would compare this to a formative assessment because she makes sure her students understand and pass the first entrée before moving on Dessert: once completed with entrees students move on to dessert which is an overview of the whole chapter

Differentiated Instruction Students have an option on how they want to do their entrees they can choose from graphic organizers, timelines, eulogies…etc This allows students to feel that they are playing a part in what they are learning since not every student learns the same it is a great way for many different types of learners. Since history is something that I want to teach I found this video very helpful. I liked how the learning menus help students minimize simply skimming and missing important factors. I want to incorporate a graphic organizer because it helps students with power phrasing information and incorporate main ideas.
