How do we explain where a place is?
Lesson 2: Geography How do we explain where a place is?
2
Questions: Discuss with your neighbour
Review: How would you describe Guangzhou as a place to someone who has never been here? Describe Guangzhou using the two types of characteristics we talked about last class How would you explain where Guangzhou is to someone who had never been here before?
3
Goal for Today: By the end of class today you will:
Be able to use absolute location to describe the location of a place.
4
NEW TERMS Open your Glossary that you created last class. Record the terms and definitions for the following: Location: Identifies where a place is on the earth Absolute location: Identifies where a place is, using a grid reference. Example: latitude and longitude *But it could be another type of grid reference as well!
5
ABSOLUTE LOCATION Describe the location of Maui using ABSOLUTE LOCATION
6
ABSOLUTE LOCATION Maps often use a grid system with imaginary lines created on the earth called lines of latitude and lines of longitude.
7
Find the lines on the map below on your globe.
ABSOLUTE LOCATION Find the lines on the map below on your globe.
8
*We write latitude first (N or S) and longitude second (E or W)
To your Glossary page, add the following terms and definitions: Parallels of latitude: Imaginary lines that run east and west across the globe. Example is the equator Meridians of longitude: Imaginary lines that run north and south around the globe. Examples are the prime meridian and International Date Line. Coordinates: The meeting points of lines of latitude and longitude. Example, Guangzhou is 23° N, 113°E *We write latitude first (N or S) and longitude second (E or W)

ABSOLUTE LOCATION GAME
Test your skills! Use the map on pages of the Atlas and your globe to help you. Work with your neighbor.
10
SHANGHAI
11
Remember: latitude first, longitude second!
Answer: 30°N, 120°E Remember: latitude first, longitude second!
12
MELBOURNE
13
ANSWER: about 38°S, 143°E
14
WHICH CITY IS LOCATED AT 60°N, 30°E?
15
ANSWER: St. Petersburg
16
WHICH CITY IS LOCATED AT ABOUT 36°N, 140°E?
17
ANSWER: TOKYO
18
ABSOLUTE AND RELATIVE LOCATION
ACTIVITY 1: Fold a piece of paper in half Label one half ‘parallels of latitude.’ Label one half ‘meridians of longitude.’ For each term draw AT LEAST 2 pictures that answer the following questions. You can use a few words but focus on answering the questions with pictures. - What are lines of latitude/parallels of longitude? - What is their purpose/what do they do and measure? You have about 10 minutes to work.

Lesson 3: Geography How do we explain where a place is? PART 2
20
Another way to identify the location of a place is with RELATIVE LOCATION.
21
Add to your Glossary: Relative location: Identifies where a place is in relation to other places, usually using cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) For example: The city of Guangzhou is south of Beijing. The country of Canada is north of the USA
22
Add to your Glossary: Cardinal directions: the cardinal directions are North, South, East and West Scale: scales are found on maps and represent distance. Example: 1 cm equals 1 km
23
RELATIVE LOCATION GAME
(Use the map on p.17.) What city is east of the Pacific Ocean, north of the Equator and west of Mexico City?
24
ANSWER: Los Angeles
25
Which city is south of the equator, west of the Atlantic Ocean, east of Lima and west of Rio de Janeiro? Point out that, when using relative location, they think from the point of view of the city that’s being discussed/referenced.
26
ANSWER: Santiago
27
What city is south of the Tropic of Capricorn, west of the Indian Ocean and east of the Atlantic Ocean? Point out that, when using relative location, they think from the point of view of the city that’s being discussed/referenced.
28
ANSWER: Cape Town
29
SCALES Find the Distance Scale on the map. Use a frame of reference like your pencil, a fingernail, or some other reference to help you find the distances between places on the map.
30
ANSWER: Lima
31
COMPASS ROSE Intermediate directions can be used to help locate an area. These are the directions that fall between the cardinal directions.
32
On the map, which city is about 1500 miles SE of Istanbul?
33
ANSWER: Tehran
34
Which city is approximately 3000 kilometers NW of Rio de Janeiro?
35
ABSOLUTE AND RELATIVE LOCATION
ACTIVITY 2: With a partner try the Latitude/Longitude Battleship game. Place your ships on the BOTTOM grid. You can place 2 destroyers, 2 submarines and 1 of the other boats (see description at the bottom on the sheet.) Only put boats on lies, not in squares. They MUST cross coordinates. Try to hit your opponents battleships. Record your hits in the TOP grid. Remember latitude (north or south) first, than longitude (east or west.) If you are incorrect you have one chance to fix your error – after that your hit doesn’t count. See who can sink all the ships first!
36
ABSOLUTE AND RELATIVE LOCATION
ACTIVITY 3: Complete the worksheet ‘Assignment 3 – Relative Location’ that is on Moodle . Upload it to Moodle by next class and be prepared to discuss your answers.
