Redesign of the Safety Syringe Jason Keiser, Jessica Chechak, Ty Weatherby BioE 1161 1/25/05

Why is a Safety Syringe Needed? To prevent the reuse of the syringe on more than one individual. To prevent damage to the needle before use. To provide a more biohazard compatible device for disposal. To prevent “needle-stick” injuries before and after use. For home users such as diabetics. These preventative measures may help to prevent the spread of AIDS and other blood-born diseases.

What Are We Doing? Our project goal is to incorporate both of these features into one device. Current safety syringes employ one of two features: –Retractable Needle –Retractable Needle Guard

The Design

Features Protective Needle Shield Retractable Needle Push Button

How It Works 2.) Depress Push Button 1.) Remove Cap 3.) Retract Protective Shield

4.) Depress Plunger Expelling the Medication 5.) Push down Plunger Until Click is Heard: Needle Retracts

6.) Replace Cap 7.) Discard

Schedule January –Complete Design February –Design Review (Early) –Preliminary Prototype Creation (Mid) –Physical Prototype Testing (Late) March –Physical Tests Continued (Early) –Make Corrections to Design if Needed (Mid) –Create Final Prototype (Mid-Late) April –Present Completed Safety Syringe
