1.8: Interpreting Graphs and Functions Unit 1: September 4, 2014
2
Between you and your neighbors, interpret and describe the graph as SPECIFICALLY as you can
3
Did you match these? Positive and negative values x & y intercepts Increasing/Decreasing (Going up/down) Relative Max/Min (Peaks and Valleys) End Behavior Lead Coefficient Direction Symmetry
4
Positive – Negative Values Positive Value – Above the x-axis Negative Value – Under the x-axis
5
Intercepts X-intercept – When the graph Crosses the x-axis. Y=0 Y-intercept – When the graph Crosses the y-axis X=0
6
Increasing/Decreasing Decreasing – Graph is going down Increasing – Graph is going up
7
Relative Maximums/Minimums Relative Min – Graph goes from Decreasing to Increasing Relative Max – Graph goes from Increasing to decreasing
8
End Behavior This graph is an even power Even graphs both go up or both Go down. This graph is an odd power Odd graphs go in opposite directions
9
Lead Coefficient This graph has a positive lead coefficient. The graph ends going up This graph has a negative lead coefficient. The graph ends going down
10
Symmetry
11
Sketch a graph with the characteristics: Has x-intercepts at -5 and 2 Decreasing for x < -2 Increasing Everywhere else
