Welcome to Chemistry with Mrs. Jackson This PowerPoint is on my website to view later.

Personal Information A member of the La Serna Science Department since 1990. UCI graduate with a B.S. in Biology with supplemental authorization in Chemistry Married and have 3 sons Mark, 16 years old Luke, 14 years old John, 14 years old

Students will learn about - atoms and elements - the organization of the Periodic Table. - why atoms react - the differences between nuclear and chemical reactions - how gases behave - and much more Course Overview – Content Chemistry is the study of atoms and their reactions. Updated course syllabus is posted on my website

Supports Next Generation Science Standards

Skills Recording data using tables. Graphing. Reading and writing technical information. Collaborating in a laboratory setting. Measuring and properly using scientific equipment. Calculations

Activities Labs – lab reports Notes Videos Quizzes Warm ups Homework (assigned most nights) Unit/Chapter Tests It is suggested that students obtain a scientific calculator.

How to Succeed in Chemistry 1) Come to class everyday (per 5 athlete’s will have challenges) and pay attention 2) Read notes again at home to be sure they make sense and come the next day with questions (most students don’t seem to know to do this) 3)Re-work the example calculations to see if you can repeat them and get to the correct answers + start to learn patterns (most students don’t seem to know to do this and don’t want to do this, but it is important) Do this before doing the homework problems.

4) Really do the homework (not copying, not waiting until teacher gives answers, not photographing with phone, etc) 5) If you don’t understand something get help right away (like next day tutorial) or help yourself (look up in Google or check out the Bozeman You Tube videos) 6) Make flashcards to help with memorizing concepts.

Unit Work - Most nights (M-Th) there will be homework assigned. Homework is usually worksheets and not work out of the text. I will base quizzes and tests on the notes I give in class and not from the text book. - Homework will be spot check and recorded into Aeries. Also, on the day of the test, students will turn a packet of all the homework and notes for the unit – this does count for points too.

Grading If an assignment can be turned in late, I will post the ultimate date in Aeries to remind students. How it appears in Synergy via Student view (Aeries should be similar)

Other Topics No test retakes but test redemption with final (final test can replace a low test score) No quiz retakes. I have most of my PowerPoint notes on my website (moving to Google classroom though)

Grade Updates You should be able to view grades through Aeries –Please, consider doing grade checks on Friday afternoon with consequences imposed during the weekend for zeroes (of course, not those due to absences!) and other very low scores You should receive a report mailed home 4 times per semester

Please! Make sure your email in Aeries is correct, I get a lot of undeliverable messages returned! Ask your child to show you the Google classroom. This is where agendas and linked documents will now be found (instead of website)

Other Topics Help for struggling students –See me at Nutrition, Tutorial or After school (by appointment) Please, keep in mind, I can only help for short amounts of time. If your son/daughter needs more help, please set up a tutor. –A list of current La Serna students willing to tutor is posted on my website. These are AP Chem students who have complete CP Chem with A’s –You tube – Bozeman series or Khan Academy

E-mail me at Stacy.Jackson@wuhsd.K12.ca.us (can get this via school website – contact section)

Thank you for attending Back to School Night!
