Focus 12/8 Like China, Japan had a long history of isolation and distrust of foreigners. Under the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Japanese banned Christian missionaries and limited foreign trade. The Japanese practiced the religion of Shintoism and Buddhism. Points for Discussion: Why would Japan ban Christian missionaries?
