The Expansion of Slavery and the Missouri Compromise The Northwest Territory was gained in the Treaty of Paris after the Revolutionary War. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 banned slavery in the Northwest territory. Economic factors after 1790 made slavery more profitable than it had been before. The Cotton Growing industry expanded thanks to the invention of the Cotton Gin. The cotton gin separated seeds from cotton by machine instead of hand. MORE COTTON WAS NEEDED TO MEET DEMAND.

As the US spread westward, it was important politically to keep slave states and free states equal with new states being made out of western territories. In 1818, 10 states allowed slavery, 11 states banned it. When Alabama became a state, it restored balance because it was made a slave state. Population was growing faster in the North Northern States had a majority in the House of Representative The Senate kept states equal.

1819-Missouri applied to enter the Union. Northerners opposed slavery so did not want Missouri join unless it banned slavery. The country was deadlocked between the North and South. Henry Clay came up with the “Missouri Compromise” Missouri was admitted as a slave state at the same time Maine came in as a free state. Congress banned slavery from the territory acquired by the Louisiana Purchase north of Missouri’s southern border. Southerner’s felt happy because they were given the land they viewed as the most profitable.
