AGENDA This session is about *some* of the new hot features of Windows Server 2012 We’ll cover some of the new features of Hyper-V, Networking, Active Directory, Windows Powershell, and more… There are a lot of new features and they are all HOT!

32 virtual processors per VM 1TB virtual machine memory New 64TB VHDX format Native 4k disk support Hyper-V Replica Hyper-V virtual fiber channel Live storage migration Windows NIC teaming Concurrent live migration Support for AES/NI Support for up to 64 nodes per cluster Support for 4000 VMs per cluster Hyper-V support for up to 2 TB of physical memory Hyper-V intelligent second level paging Live VHD merge Cluster shared volumes v2 SMB 2 Support RDMA support in SMB Scale-out file server Multi-channel SMB SRIOV Networking Thousands of PowerShell commands Virtual NIC monitor mode Rest APIs for PowerShell commands 150 Hyper-V PowerShell commands Storage PowerShell Network PowerShell Multi-Tenancy, Port ACLs / Firewall Storage metering Storage Spaces SMI-S support inbox Virtual NUMA support CPU metering Network metering Memory metering RemoteFX 3D graphics remoting Touch remoting USB remoting VDI Guest Application Health Monitoring VM Hardware Error Isolation VM Failover Prioritization Trusted boot support Removable Shell & IE Enables roles in VHDs Offline Multi-machine management protocol Integrated workflows and PowerShell Domain Controller cloning Enhanced Direct Access Safe Domain controller virtualization RID pool enhanced management Enhanced logging PowerShell 3.0 PowerShell Workflow PowerShell history Kerberos CBAC Compound identity Remote FX IP Address Management DHCP HA DA object recovery GUI ISCI Target Windows NIC teaming Virtualization, virtualization, virtualization 32 virtual processors per VM 1TB virtual machine memory New 64TB VHDX format Native 4k disk support Hyper-V Replica Hyper-V virtual fiber channel Virtual networking Live storage migration Support for up to 64 nodes per cluster Support for 4000 VMs per cluster Hyper-V support for up to 2 TB of physical memory Live VHD merge Cluster shared volumes v2 SMB 2 Support RDMA support in SMB Scale-out file server Multi-channel SMB Virtual NIC monitor mode Storage PowerShell Network PowerShell Multi-Tenancy, Port ACLs / Firewall Storage metering Storage Spaces SMI-S support inbox Virtual NUMA support CPU metering Network metering Memory metering RemoteFX 3D graphics remoting Touch remoting USB remoting VDI Guest Application Health Monitoring VM Hardware Error Isolation VM Failover Prioritization Trusted boot support Removable Shell & IE Enables roles in VHDs Offline Multi-machine management protocol Integrated workflows and PowerShell Built for the Future, a long list of new features
5
Let’s install Windows Server 2012 No difference in features: Standard & Datacenter are the same Server Core ORFull GUI? It doesn’t matter any more, because you can have both!
6
Remove the GUI after the initial installation and go for a Server Core DEMO
7
What about the new desktop? Windows keyMetro Start Windows key + COpen Charms bar Windows + ISettings on Charms bar Windows + QSearch on Charms bar Hover & click Metro Start Hover & select from Charms bar Just start typing
8
Server Manager New tool, lets you do the configuration to multiple servers at once Create Server Groups Information about every server you have in your network Green color is good, red is bad You can even launch PowerShell for a server remotely You can even install Server Manager locally on your computer and do remote administration
9
Server Manager DEMO
10
PowerShell is now better… and bigger! PowerShell 3.0 with over 2000 cmdlets –PowerShell ISE is improved –Create scripts easily –Newest help files download on demand – Update-Help
11
Let’s play with PowerShell! DEMO
12
DHCP Failover Do you remember the 80-20 rule on Windows Server 2008 R2 DHCP? Great improvement, allows DHCP Servers to communicate Two modes: Load Balance or Hot Standby
13
DHCP Failover DEMO
14
NIC Teaming Just “team” your network adapter cards You can team cards from different vendors Very simple configuration steps through Server Manager
15
NIC Teaming DEMO
16
Hyper-V Improvements More Live Migrations Live Migrations without a storage, but with SMB 3.0 Move storage, move an entire virtual machine No need to turn off the VM, connection remains active Hyper-V Replica: killer feature Built your disaster recovery site with less cost and effort
17
1. Move the VM storage to a network share with no downtime DEMO
18
2. Live Migration of a VM without a storage with no downtime DEMO
19
3. Move the VM storage to a cluster storage with no downtime DEMO
20
4. Hyper-V Replica DEMO
21
Windows Azure OnLine Backup Just perform a backup to the cloud You need a subscription to the service Simple setup through the Windows Server Backup Console
22
Windows Azure Online Backup DEMO
23
Windows 2008 R2 DirectAccess – A killer feature, but not simple… When a DirectAccess client connects to the Internet it is automatically connected to the corporate intranet –No user action required Corporate intranet Internet It’s a truly great user experience - But … you need to configure a lot of complex settings…
24
DirectAccess on Windows Server 2012 Easily configured with a wizard You do not need two network cards anymore You need a certificate, but you can use a self-signed that DA automatically creates Group Policies are also automatically created and applied

Virtualize Domain Controllers In the past, we should keep at least one physical domain controller Snapshots were not allowed, as we could have problems with USNs, lingering objects, etc Active Directory was not “clever” enough to realize which domain controller is virtual and act accordingly. Now this is possible, because there is a new flag in AD: VMGenerationID So, now you can snapshot your DCs
27
Domain Controller Cloning You need the PDC FSMO role to be on a Windows Server 2012 DC Windows Server 2012 DC to clone A virtualization platform that supports the VMGeneration ID So you practically export the virtual DC and you import it again as a new virtual DC But what about SIDs, networks and computer names?
28
Domain Controller cloning… Check the Hypervisor, in Device Manager System you should have a device called Hyper-V Generation Counter
29
Domain Controller cloning Add the domain controller account for the DC that you want to clone to the Clonable Domain Controllers group Run Get-ADDCCloningExcludedApplicationList – GenerateXML cmdlet in Powershell Create the DCCloneConfig.xml file with a Powershell cmdlet. You should add the computername and the IP Address of the new DC here.
30
Domain Controller cloning
31
Take offline or shutdown the DC that you want to clone The last step is to export and import again the virtual machine… Keep in mind: you should create a new unique ID for the new virtual DC when you import it on the same Hyper-V Server You start both DCs and you let them finish the process.
32
IP Address Management Central Management of your internal IP Addresses and services like DHCP, DNS, NAP
