Topic: Prosperity, Depression and the New Deal (1919-1941) The Post-World War I period was characterized by economic, social and political turmoil. Post- war prosperity brought about changes to American popular culture. However, economic disruptions growing out the war years led to worldwide depression. The United States attempted to deal with the Great Depression through economic programs created by the federal government.

Improved Standard of Living Following WWI, the U.S. experienced a period of successful advances in industry and an economic boom that improved the standards of living for many Americans Technological innovations in communication included commercial radio broadcasts, talking motion pictures, and wider circulation of newspapers and magazines

New Innovations Lead to Improved Standard of Living Advances in transportation – Model A – Airplane Mass production techniques made factory production more efficient These developments also contributed to an improved standard of living

Changes Because of the Automobile Increased automobile ownership contributed to – The growth of suburbs – The creation of new businesses Motels, gas stations, and repair shops – The expansion of other businesses rubber, plate glass, petroleum, steel – New roads being constructed to accommodate increased traffic

Some Changes Created Tensions Use of the automobile also challenged traditional family values – Young people used cars to exercise freedom from parental rules Increased numbers of commuters lead to traffic congestion

Mass Advertising Radio became the first mass broadcasting medium The mass production and the lowering of prices on consumer goods meant that more items were available to more people than ever before The construction of the transcontinental railroads provided a national market for a company’s goods

Mass Advertising Advertising a product changed from simply announcing the existence of a product in a dull, dry fashion to persuading the public they needed and deserved to own the product By developing repeat customers, advertising also helped build brand loyalty for the company Brand loyalty helps sell other existing and new products to these same customers
