7 7 What is a monument? According to the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance, a ‘monument’ is a place, building, site or structure which is declared to be a monument, historical building or archaeological or palaeontological site or structure. Unless granted a permit by the Antiquities Authority, no person is allowed to carry out any building works, demolition or any action that interfere with the monument. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Heritage are natural or cultural properties which are inscribed on the World Heritage List.
