If so, which abuses will you eliminate?

3 How did the Catholic Church Fight Back? Standard 7.57 Analyze how the Catholic Counter- Reformation revitalized the Catholic Church and the forces that fostered the movement, including St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits, and the Council of Trent.

4 The Catholic/ Counter- Reformation It can be assumed that the Catholic Church could never have predicted the force of the Protestant Reformation This is especially so in terms of the numbers of noblemen and other wealthy individuals who were attracted to the theology of Luther and Calvin. In the 1500s and 1600s, Catholics set out to improve their Church and to stop the spread of Protestant ideas.

5 Forces that fostered the Counter Reformation Council of Trent - Between 1545-1563, the Catholic Church held meetings known as the Council of Trent to address the problems in the Catholic Church brought to knowledge by Martin Luther and other reformers. - The council not only instituted reforms, but also a plan to win back supporters of the Catholic religion. Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuits -Soldier and Spanish reformer who sought to create a new religious order - Founded the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits, formed the backbone of the Counter Reformation - As a brotherhood, they wanted to win back converts to the Catholic Church Roman Inquisition - Alarmed by the spread of Protestantism and especially by its penetration into Italy, Pope Paul III established in Rome the Congregation of the Inquisition. - Primary Job: trying and convicting heretics within the Roman Catholic Church
