HR-MS Discovery & Association Considerations for 802.16n

Goals Introduce and discuss some principles for HR-MS discovery & association As we don’t have a ToC reference it is difficult to produce specific text at this point However we could agree on some principles

Two dissimilar scenarios require HR-MS discovery: MS to MS Direct Communication with or without infrastructure stations (MS-MS communications) (SRD 6.1.3.1) HR-MS Forwarding to Network (HR-MS forwarding) (SRD 6.1.3.2) Above will likely be used in different environments and for very different applications

Let’s compare: PropertyHR-MS ForwardingMS-MS Communications With / Without Infrastructure Application exampleSmart GridPPDR TopologyTreeAdhoc peer to peer in P2P or P2MP configurations MobilityLowMedium to High Number of subscriber stations Very large compared to current cellular On par with current cellular or smaller Network sharingYes – with non M2M devicesYes (if infrastructure is present) / No Battery consumptionVery lowOn par with current cellular Link duration“Almost permanent”Per call (avoid keeping n(n-1)/2 links) Frequency of link creationVery low (once?)High Link creation latency requirement LooseTight BS can help?YesYes (if infrastructure present) / No

Observations Should minimize interference Should minimize battery consumption Speed of link creation not as important Should optimize speed of link creation Interference and battery consumption are not as important HR-MS forwarding MS-MS Communications These differences result in different discovery and association procedures for the two cases

Text proposal Section xxx HR-MS discovery for MS-MS communications The HR-MS discovery procedure and signals are designed to optimize the speed of link creation. Section yyy HR-MS discovery for HR-MS Forwarding The HR-MS discovery procedure and signals are designed to minimize interference and battery consumption.
