The pronoun Y Y is used to replace places and location expressions!

Basic Review Here are examples of place expressions, which are replaced with Y: à Paris à la pâtisserie en haut de la Tour Eiffel chez mon ami dans la boîte en France

I am going home. I am going there. Je vais chez moi. J’y vais. He is on top of the Tour Eiffel. He is there. Il est en haut de la Tour Eiffel. Il y est. It is nice weather in France. It is nice there. Il fait beau en France. Il y fait beau. The pen is in the box.The pen is there. Le stylo est dans la boîte. Le stylo y est.

MORE EXAMPLES: Tout le monde va au café. Au café is replaced by the pronoun Y. Therefore, you would say: Tout le monde y va. You would have “y” because you are replacing the place with y, which means there. Y pronoun

Rule One The Y precedes the verb -in the present tense -in the past tense Ex. Mon ami est à Paris. Il y est. Mon ami est allé à Paris. Il y est allé.

Rule Two Y precedes -the infinitive of a futur proche construction Ex. Elle va monter en haut de l’Arc de Triomphe. Elle va y monter.

Rule Three Y -attaches to the end of the verb with a hyphen for a positive command Ex. Allez chez moi! Allez-y!

Rule Four Y -precedes the verb in a negative command Ex. Ne montez pas en haut de la Tour Eiffel! N’ y montez pas!
