© PDKWUCC 2015 SAMR – A Tool for Technology Integration OBJECTIVES Define SAMR Understand how the effective use of SAMR can contribute to improved teaching and learning with technology. Understand that the use of technology must be intentional and must “fit the task” (supports good teaching practices) SAMR is a “process” used to develop “products” which redefine tasks Understand that the ultimate goal is deeper learning and how technology can assist with this goal when planned for effectively.

The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition Model, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura helps educators infuse technology into teaching and learning. This model supports and enables teachers to design, develop, and infuse digital learning experiences that utilize technology (Cipinko, 2014). © PDKWUCC 2015 Image created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, Ph.D. http://www.hippasus.com/rrpweblog/ http://www.hippasus.com/rrpweblog/

SUBSTITUTIONEXAMPLES Students print out a worksheet, finish it and turn it in. ©PDKWUCC 2015 SAMR Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change

AUGMENTATIONEXAMPLES Students take a quiz using Google Forms instead of using pencil and paper. ©PDKWUCC 2015 SAMR Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement

MODIFICATIONEXAMPLES Students write and record an essay with an original soundtrack. This is then shared with an audience (parents, etc.) ©PDKWUCC 2015 SAMR Tech allows for significant task redesign

REDEFINITIONEXAMPLES Students create a documentary. Teams of students take on subtopics and collaborate on the final product while contacting outside sources for information. ©PDKWUCC 2015 SAMR Tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable

© PDKWUCC 2015 A sample activity Which S-A-M-R stage? Students collaborate using a spreadsheet to gather shoe sales data, calculate mean purchase data using functions, graph their findings using spreadsheet functions and then produces and presents a report detailing best marketing practices for the store. Students use a spreadsheet to calculate the mean of shoe sales data by using built in spreadsheet functions, and graph their findings using spreadsheet functions. Students collaborate using a spreadsheet to gather shoe sale data, calculate mean purchase data by using functions and graph their findings using spreadsheet functions. Students use a handout in their calculations of the mean of shoe sales data then graph their findings.

© PDKWUCC 2015 A sample activity Which S-A-M-R stage? Use an online dictionary or search a document. Students collaborate, share and present a mindmap. The class takes a test using Google Forms. A student uses an app to create shapes, captures them with a screencast and shares the work with others. How might the activities be “moved up” the SAMR continuum?

© PDKWUCC 2015 Let’s Re-Cap Substitution – changes out the old tech for the new (computer as typewriter; reading a story online) Augmentation – enhancement of teaching and learning without change to the process (embeds charts in a Word document; designs a brochure; contribute to online blogs, etc.) Modification – significant changes in how students and teachers work (the creation, gathering, and combining of information online) Redefinition – new teaching and learning previously inconceivable (creating new products in collaboration with others e.g., wikis, video conferences, multimedia productions
