Unit 4 Global Warming
2
What are these buildings made of and what is their purpose? They are made of glass so that plants can grow well in it when it is cold outside. Greenhouse
3
How does it work? The glass traps the heat from the sun, making the air warm so that plants can grow better.
4
What are greenhouse gases? Some byproducts of burning fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil, the most important one of which is carbon dioxide.
5
What’s greenhouse effect? Greenhouse gases perform the same function as the glass in a greenhouse --- They trap the heat of the sun and keep the air surrounding the earth warm. It is called the greenhouse effect.
6
The Earth Is Becoming Warmer – But Does It Matter?
7
It has a title, a first paragraph that is in bold to introduce the topic, the main text in two columns, and two graphs. Fast-reading What is special about the structure of the passage? How it is organized?
8
Introduction During the 20 th century, the temperature of the earth rose about one degree Fahrenheit. That probably does not seem much to you or me, but it is a rapid increase when compared to other natural changes. So how has this come about and does it matter? Earth Care’s Sophie Armstrong explores these questions. fact opinion topic
9
Careful reading Para.2-5 1.What do the two graphs show? What are they for? To illustrate points by providing evidence. 3.What is the reason for increasing temperature? All scientists subscribe to the view that the burning of fossil fuels has resulted in the increasing temperature. 4. How do greenhouse gases warm the earth? More heat tends to be trapped in the atmosphere causing the global temperature to go up. 2. What has caused global warming? It is human activity that has resulted in global warming rather than a random phenomenon.
10
1.What is the topic sentence of Para.6? Para.6 2. Can you find out the phrases to show different opinions? What are they? The first sentence. On the one hand…on the other hand… Some are in favor of the view that the increasing temperature will cause catastrophe, while others are opposed to this view. 3.Why are there two quotes? To attract our attention, and therefore to make us interested enough to read the whole passage.
11
The two different viewpoints towards the effects of global warming between Dr. Janice Foster and George Hambley Dr. Janice FosterGeorge Hambley Carbon dioxide has caused the global temperature to __________. An increase of five degrees would be a ____________ and could be ______________. More carbon dioxide is a __________ thing, which makes crops __________ and will encourage ____________________. go up catastrophe very serious positive produce a greater range of animals
12
Of the two ideas, which are you in favor of ? The Dr Janice Foster’s. Why ? Because we have witnessed a large quantities of disasters predicted by some people.
13
Para.7 1.The author probably holds the view that_____ A. actually global warming is good for man B. we should do nothing about the global warming C. catastrophes will happen if the globe keeps on warming D. a lot remains to be found out about the effects of global warming D
14
2. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph of the article? It functions as a conclusion by asking the reader to reflect on the major theme of the text and to predict what might happen in the future.
15
THE EARTH IS BECOMING WARMER Fact Opinions Topic 2 graphs 2 quotes2 questions Structure of the passage Fact and cause of global warming Attitudes of scientists Thinking
16
1.Who wrote the magazine article? What attitude does the author hold towards the global warming? Why? Understanding 2. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage? Objective. Because the author didn’t give her own opinion. To draw our attention to global warming. To appeal to people to focus on things around themselves.
17
Homework According to the structure we have analyzed, summarize the passage in no more than 60 words.
