What can the sender do to improve communication effectiveness? What can the receivers do?

The Communication Process Channel The medium selected by the sender through which the message travels to the receiver. Types of Channels Formal Channels ○ Are established by the organization and transmit messages that are related to the professional activities of members. Informal Channels ○ Used to transmit personal or social messages in the organization. These informal channels are spontaneous and emerge as a response to individual choices.

Formal Communication The process of sharing official information with others who need to know it, According to the prescribed patterns depicted in an organization chart

Formal Communication downward communication: instructions, directions, orders feedback upward communication: data required to complete projects status reports suggestions for improvement, new ideas

Transformational vs. Transactional Leadership Transformational – arouses intense feelings and generates turbulent one-to- one relationships with followers Transactional – motivates followers by exchanging rewards for services

Transformational Leader Raises the level of follower awareness, consciousness, and commitment to designated outcomes as well as knowledge of how to achieve these outcomes. Encourages followers to transcend their self- interests for the sake of the organization Alters the followers’ needs or expands their wants

Transactional Leader Recognizes what subordinates want from their work and attempts to get it – when performance warrants Exchanges rewards and promises of rewards for subordinates’ efforts Is responsive to subordinates’ immediate self- interests – if they get the job done
