CLIMATE Climate is the prevailing weather conditions of a region over a period of time. The South Central States all have a variety of climate zones: Oklahoma has a continental climate Arkansas has a temperate climate Louisiana has a semitropical climate Texas has blend of continental and subtropical

AR FLAG Diamond shapes in the center represent the diamond gemstone, because Arkansas is the only state in the USA where diamonds have been found. Since Arkansas was the twenty-fifth state to join the Union, there are 25 white stars around the diamond. The three blue stars in the lower part of the center represent Spain, France and the United States, the countries that have ruled Arkansas. The blue star in the upper center represents the Confederacy, of which Arkansas was a member. The flag was adopted in 1921

ARKANSAS NATIONAL MONUMENTS TOLTEC MOUNDS SITE One of the most significant remnants of Native American life in the state. These ancient earthworks are the remains of ceremonial and government complex which was inhabited between 650 -1050. LA FLAG The flag consists of : The pelican group from the state seal, in white and gold A white ribbon bearing the state motto, "Union, Justice, and Confidence", on a field of a solid blue. Flag adopted 1912

LOUISIANA NATIONAL MONUMENT. Fort Jackson was constructed between 1822 and 1832. OK FLAG The Flag : Honors more than 60 groups of Native Americans and their ancestors. The blue field comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the civil war. The center shield is the battle shield of an Osage warrior. It is made of buffalo hide and decorated with eagle feathers. Two symbols of peace lie across the shield. One is the calumet, or peace pipe. The other is an olive branch. Crosses on the shield are Native American signs for stars, representing high ideals.

TX FLAG The official state flag of Texas, is called the Lone Star Flag. Adopted in 1845 when Texas became the 28th state of the United States. The colors represent : bravery (red) purity (white) and loyalty (blue). The large white star was first used on Texas flags in the 1830's during the battles between Texas and Mexico. Adopted on January 25, 1839
