1 LBJ -Lyndon Baines Johnson -4 th generation Texan -Democrat -became follower of FDR “New Dealer” idolized FDR -showed remarkable ability to forge compromises also known as the LBJ Treatment -helped pass Civil Rights Act of 1957 through his ability to compromise -Johnson encouraged the nation to move past the assassination of JFK and to pass JFK’s bills -sent Congress a program to fix the nation’s problems

3 Great Society -’64 election gives Johnson a mandate wins by a landslide -creating a higher SOL (standard of living) and providing equal opportunity were objectives of Great Society Over 60 programs passed -Secondary Education Act Education is the Key to the Door of the Great Society -Medicare 65 and older low cost medical care -Medicaid extended healthcare to welfare reciepents -HUD Housing and Urban Development -National Endowment for the Humanities aid to help cultural artists

5 Silent Spring by Rachel Carson These sprays, dusts, and aerosols are now applied almost universally to farms, gardens, forests, and homes — nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the “good” and the “bad,” to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in soil — all this though the intended target may be only a few weeds or insects. Can anyone believe it is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons on the surface of the earth without making it unfit for all life? 7 Miranda Rights You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions. Do you understand? Anything you do say may be used against you in a court of law. Do you understand? You have the right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. Do you understand? If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. Do you understand? If you decide to answer questions now without an attorney present you will still have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to an attorney. Do you understand? Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?
