1
Role of Imaging in diagnosis A Vohrah
2
First time it has been run entirely by radiology Hope we don’t have too many hiccups Explain the role of imaging inpatient care and management. Some idea of the hazards of imaging
3
History and examination. Other tests
4
Blood tests Imaging Functional tests
5
Plain films Uses radiation. Ionising radiation Can see fat, soft tissue, gas, bone and calcium.
6
Ultrasound Using high frequency sound waves to create images Mainly utilising the different reflective properties of tissues. No ionising radiation Is this always safe?
7
Magnetic resonance Imaging Uses strong magnetic field Lines up spinning protons. Different protons will give off energy in different ways depending on their immediate environments. No ionising radiation, but strong magnetic fields are utilised. Is this always safe? Slow and expensive.
8
Computerised tomagraphy Creates images using ionising radiation. Can create amazing images. Not as good as MRI in soft tissue differentiation. Very fast, relatively expensive
