Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

Photosynthesis
4
Chemical Equation for Photosynthesis REACTANTSPRODUCTS Carbon Dioxide + Water + Light Energy Sugar + Oxygen (sunlight) 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light → C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 energy Photo = light Synthesis = combining parts to make something Photosynthesis = combining water and carbon dioxide (with the help of the sun) to make sugar/food!
5
Importance ofPhotosynthesis: 1. FOOD Produces food for almost all organisms. – Challenge – Can you think of a food that is NOT somehow traced back to a plant? 2. “FRESH” AIR Removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen.
6
Location ofPhotosynthesis: All plant cells do photosynthesis, but where in the cell does it take place? Pancakes = Sugar!
7
Photosynthesis Song (To the tune of “Where is Thumbkin”) Photosynthesis in the chloroplast Reactants are, reactants are Carbon dioxide, water, energy from sunlight, Chlorophyll. That’s what you need. Photosynthesis in the chloroplast Products are, products are Oxygen released, energy stored as glucose. That’s what you make. Play the audio and sing along!

Cellular Respiration
9
Oxygen + Sugar Carbon Dioxide + Water + ENERGY (ATP) Respiration = the process of using sugar and oxygen to make (ATP) ENERGY! Notice: Some water is also produced in this process. (Some desert animals rely on this as their main source of water!) REACTANTS PRODUCTS Chemical Equation for Respiration
10
CELLULAR Respiration ALL cells do respiration Since plants AND animals have cells, they both need to do respiration to make energy for those cells. Plants just make the food that their cells eat! GOES INCOMES OUT OR
11
Importance ofRespiration: ENERGY (ATP) is like fuel for the cell. ENERGY (ATP) allows cells to build and move things around to keep the organism alive. Remember, ALL living things need and use ENERGY (ATP).
12
What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration? + Energy (ATP)
13
Location ofRespiration: This important process happens in ALL* cells, but where in the cell does it take place? *There is one exception, which we will talk about soon.
14
Mitochondria/Mitochondrion Mitochondrion = Singular (One) Pronunciation (how it sounds): “My – Toe – Kon – Dree – Uh” “My – Toe – Kon – Dree – On” Mitochondria = Plural (Multiple)
