what’s the score? where do we want to go? how can we get there? recommendations presentation agenda

the game – 1 st half good news 10+ bands in Sydney, 2+ in Canberra, many in country regions PBA, band tutoring, piping & drumming school, vendors, workshops, etc youth bands: Scots, Knox, Scots Bathurst solid foundation for growth score @ ½ time = 1 v 0

the game – 2 nd half Diving, Surviving or Thriving ??? Band trends? Adults – stable? Youth (exclude Scots, Knox) – declining? Youth – no community youth band in NSW Scoreboard overall: 1 v 1: a “Draw” youth: 1 v 2: a “Lose”

post game review THRIVE recruiting is essential but today’s lifestyle demands achieve more with less (efficiency) competition – everywhere, everyday MUST be more efficient & competitive

basic questions what turns off a young person? what motivates a young person to devote a lot of time and energy in any activity? why would anyone want to join?

turn-offs or barriers? don’t know anything about it old fashioned idea of pipe bands competing activities no or diminished Scottish background expense (instruments, time) difficult to learn attention span lack of youth peers

why join a pipe band? Scottish heritage interest parent interest musical interest just want to do it

why do kids do any activity? games & fun friends & peers competition – winning learning popular activity or role model recognition & awards low $ short attention activity safe, secure, reliable parent interest

Beckham bends it - GOAL! goal = Goal (short term) goal = more goals than competitors (medium term) goal = win the cup (long term) goal = improve (long term) ACT: Achievement, Competition, Teamwork ACT: Key driving force for staying ….. but … what … about … starting …

maths 101 L = P x I x C # of learners is proportional to the number of times people interact with bands & to the impact that is made basic maths: increasing I &/or P will increase L ! efficiency: to increase L by increasing I

“its hypothetical” P I Street March 10,000 1 10 school visits10002 10 workshops 200 3

what is the weakest link? Sam/Sue -> x -> learner -> ACT information sessions at schools banners web sites High I, low p awareness

what is the weakest link? Sam/Sue -> x -> learner -> ACT Wacky, fun and low cost musical workshop which presents powerful view of pipe bands. Run at gatherings. Set duration for 1 hour. Run in view of other kids. Run in view of parents (who might be seeking a worthwhile activity for their children). High I, low p FUN

project management 101 VAPAR Vision (Goals, Objectives) Actions Plans Act – do it (tick) Review

goal setting set membership trend goal for next 1, 2, 5, 10 years. set youth membership trend goal for next 1, 2, 5, 10 years. 5 year goals 1 st new community youth band 5% growth overall 25% youth increase

activities do nothing. #1. band activities. #2. cooperative band activities. #3. association activities. #4. wild cards #5. shameless self promotion

#1 band activities SHOUT: websites, banners, forums, flyers, stalls, etc. visit schools. community fundraising events – fetes. PLAN at least one promotional activity for every future event. Pros & Cons Risk: low

#2. coop bands activities MENTOR system. share knowledge. combine activities – mini massed bands. ‘poaching’ is praise: feeder band association has advancement to senior band as #1 objective Pros & Cons Risk: Low

#3. association activities reduce barriers to encourage transfer of skills to lower grade bands (i.e. Mentor system) publish membership trends. reduce comms barriers to find bands: effective web site use www for communications email, web site, forums Cons & Pros Risk: low

#4. wild card most executive roles in bands are administrative missing: roles which prepare for the future (~ 5 years ahead) suggestion: band RO (recruit officer) suggestion: NSWPBA – ROC New position Self funding – incentive for results

#4. wild card ROC Goals design & publish a “Recruitment Pack for ROs” design & coordinate fun intro workshops organise poster comp for youth – template design to promote pipe bands $ prize & recognition designed by youth for youth amount of working funds related to workshop success – the incentive for SUCCESS

#5. shameless self promotion Anzac Day (& other parades) ‘well turned out’ youth massed bands during the televised parade ‘magnificent’ banner at the front ‘spectacular’ drum majors leading the bands large ‘modern’ youth marching bands have done this for years the commentator implies that pipe bands are not modern! Kids don’t want to do something that is old fashioned!
