7 th grade review 4 th nine weeks

Dichotomous Key Remember to start at 1a! Treat each statement as a true/false. If the statement is true, follow the “go to” step. If the statement is false, go to 1b. Continue down the list, until you get a species name.

Let’s practice! Look at organism C: 1a Has two spots on its prothorax (space under its head) go to 2 1b Does not have spots on it prothorax go to 3 2a Has a short body go to 5 2b Has a long body go to 4 3a Is mostly dark all over go to 5 3b Is mostly light all over go to 5 4a Has two cercus on end of abdomen go to 6 4b Does not have cercus American Cockroach

Let’s practice! Look at organism E: 1a Has two spots on its prothorax (space under its head) go to 2 1b Does not have spots on it prothorax go to 3 2a Has a short body go to 5 2b Has a long body go to 4 3a Is mostly dark all over Oriental Cockroach 3b Is mostly light all over go to 5 4a Has two cercus on end of abdomen go to 6 4b Does not have cercus American Cockroach

How do I use a flow chart to identify a species?

What is succession? Succession is when an ecosystem is “successful” in reclaiming an area with new species after a long period of time. Primary succession is the first time soil is made from rock. So lichens and mosses are present first to break the rock into soil. Secondary succession is the second time something has grown in the existing soil. So organisms adapted to that area can take over the ecosystem.

Let’s practice! Is this a picture of primary of secondary succession?

Let’s practice! Is this a picture of primary of secondary succession?

Let’s practice! Is this a picture of primary of secondary succession?

Let’s practice! Is this a picture of primary of secondary succession?

BIODIVERSITY!!! Why is this important? The more variety of organisms you have, the better chance an ecosystem can survive a disaster!

WED Weathering Breaking rocks Into sediments Erosion Moving the sediments by wind or water or ice Deposition Sediments being laid down in an area

What’s wrong in this picture and how could it affect ground water? Leaking oil can wash off the driveway into the drain

What’s wrong in this picture and how could it affect ground water? Leaking oil can wash off the driveway into the drain

Protect your watershed! Pick up trash Don’t dump things in the storm drain Don’t change your oil on the grass Don’t put pesticides/ fertilizers/oil down the sink

What is compost? Any organic matter that will break down into usable nutrients in the soil.

What happens to all that decaying matter? ? Decomposers break down the matter into nutrients in the soil.

How do I make an inference? Use your background Knowledge about the Subject What do you already Know? Read for text clues or visual clues What is the writer trying to tell you?

Adaptations and inference I know butterflies are eaten by predators. I see the picture shows spots that look like eyes. How would eyes on butterfly wings help the butterfly?

Adaptations and inference I know butterflies are eaten by predators. I see the picture shows spots that look like eyes. How would eyes on butterfly wings help the butterfly?

Plant cell vs. Animal Cell What are the main differences between a plant and animal cell? What do the parts do for the plant?

Photosynthesis Reactants yield Products What are the “reactants” of photosynthesis? What are the “products” of photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide, water, and light Sugar and oxygen

Digestion What path does food take to be digested into the bloodstream during digestion? 1. Mouth 2. esophagus 3. Stomach 4. small intestine

Energy transformation During this process, what are the energy transformations from the food to our body? Food is chemical our moving body is mechanical

Organic Molecules

Sexual vs. Asexual

Cell theory

Body systems What is the main function of each body system? Filter wastes Maintain balance

Body systems What is the main function of each body system? Move my bones Support and provide structure

Body systems What is the main function of each body system? Circulate my blood Protection Against germs

Energy Pyramid Where is the least energy from the sunlight in the energy pyramid? Where is the most energy from the sunlight in the energy pyramid?

Who is doing work?
